7.75% when you owe HMRC. 2.75% when HMRC owes you. Very tidy spread when you write the rules yourself.
From HMRC's guidance on "what happens if you do not pay your tax bill" updated on this morning.

Only the BBC could devise a funding model where the solution to people not watching your programmes is to charge them for watching somebody else's. Under this logic, every time I order a Domino's, I should send Pizza Hut £2.50 to support the future of British pizza.
🚨 NEW: The Government is planning to extend the licence fee to online platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon

I hate to be the one to burst the Tesla bubble today, but the spectacular “flight” we witnessed at the Roadster reveal needs a little context. The car is carrying around 250kg of compressed air, plus the weight of the tanks, valves and thrusters needed to contain and release it. Based on the published figures, that gives it roughly 1.5–2 seconds of maximum thrust before the system needs to be refilled. In short, it's a gimmick.

Excellent article in the Wall Street Journal on Britain's unsustainable welfare spending: — 7 million people (over 10% of the UK population) now claim at least one or more sickness or disability benefit. This is up 60% in the past 6 years. — The UK will spend over £100 billion pound this year on sickness and disability benefits. This is projected to increase to £130 billion a year by 2030. — No other Western country has seen such a rise in disability claims. In the US, 10.6 million people claim some form of federal disability payment, despite the population being 5x larger. — 1 in 7 new cars sold in the UK are under the Motability scheme; however, only 10% of cars are modified for a disability. In one dealership, 25 out of 26 cars they sold in August were all under the Motability scheme. — Charities, consultants, YouTubers and TikTokers have all sprung up, telling people how to maximise benefit access. Some of these videos receive hundreds of thousands of views. Over 1,000 people a day are signing on for PIP. — According to a Government survey from 2024, 25% of the UK's working age population could theoretically be classed as disabled under the current criteria and access these benefits. — A minimum wage worker who works 40 hours per week would take home around £1,880 per month after tax; however, if you are classed as too sick to work and claim PIP, you can take home £2,000 tax free per month. wsj.com/world/uk/united-king…

The UK Prime Minister solves the fuel price rises by telling motorists to look at Google Maps to find the cheapest garage. Next week he will solve the housing crisis by reminding everyone that Rightmove exists.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

Yeah… it’s not looking good. I knew it would eventually become a political battle between the UAE and the UK. The UAE have started threatening and blackmailing the UK, and the Prime Minister is starting to fold. It would be a massive shame if the biggest cheats in English football history managed to escape punishment because of political pressure. It would completely damage the image of the English game. This is a defining moment for English football. The fans need to come together and fight this war. If the UK folds to UAE political pressure and City escapes punishment, people will never look at English football’s governing bodies the same way again. It could even have serious consequences for the Premier League’s global credibility and viewership.

Unlike our politicians @wesstreeting
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting says the security services have "once again demonstrated that they work around the clock to keep this country safe". His comments come after five men were arrested on suspicion of terror offences. RAF Fairford latest: trib.al/c3PnDjj

This is the attitude that will destroy the UK if it is allowed to prevail. A taxpayer-funded infant MP calls a man who created thousands of jobs and paid hundreds of millions of £s in tax during his career “a parasite”. 🙄
Coming from the man who moved to Monaco to dodge a £4 billion tax bill. Jim Ratcliffe, a billionaire parasite, attacks the most vulnerable in society to protect his own class interests. He should actually just focus on getting a win at Old Trafford.

Replying to @zarahsultana
Please explain how a man who pays 17,000 employees salaries is a "parasite"? Compared to you who's never had a real job and sits on X stirring up division

Not a good look for @WFCOfficial . Might have changed now with new hires but to see that the ownership and management teams were on two different pages makes sense why some of our signings were a bit suspect.
Caught up with @SydneyFC midfielder Jake Hollman after sealing his return to his boyhood club 🇦🇺 25-year-old details the fully story behind his nightmare stint with English side Walsall FC and why it was doomed from the start 🤯 Really worth a read ⬇ aleagues.com.au/news/sydney-…
