In awarding this year’s #NobelPeacePrize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice.
History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise. But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench.

It’s not easy to find the perfect topic for a meta-analysis, but parainfectious (rather than postinfectious, as most patients still have fever at onset) neurological encephalopathic syndromes are a perfect one!
Great summary of this highly heterogeneous topic in @TheLancet !
Key messages:
• In adults, consider only ANE, FIRES, and MERS.
• Rotavirus is associated with MERS; influenza/SARS-CoV-2 with ANE, and HHV6 with AESD.
• High heterogeneity in MRI patterns and outcomes, with ANE having the worst outcomes despite treatment, suggesting that even umbrella term, they probably are different pathomechanims.
• And, of course, CSF helps rule out infection but, so far, does not aid much in diagnosis!

Could we be missing a reversible cause of brain dysfunction in children with portosystemic shunts?

In our systematic review hypermanganesemia was common, particularly with portosystemic shunting, and often improved after definitive treatment.

We used to hate Chatur and find him irritating in 3 Idiots. Rancho was the Hero. And here we have him standing up and speaking for Sonam Wangchuk on whom the movie 3 Idiots was based on. Meanwhile, Aamir Khan, Rancho, has lost his voice. Now u know who is a Hero

Our universities are there to help young Australians get the workforce skills we need; in medicine, science, AI, the humanities.
If pursuing a PhD is only financially viable for those from wealthy backgrounds, we're selling the country short. PhD stipends must be increased.

Until last week Australia was the only developed country with endemic trachoma, a devastating eye disease which often causes blindness. Many thousands of people have lost their sight to trachoma, which is much more common in indigenous communities.
It’s been eradicated here after decades of work by doctors, nurses, medical researchers, and aid workers - with government support and sustained community involvement. Massive congratulations to all involved in this historic effort.

The development of international consensus definitions for infection-triggered encephalopathy syndromes is a crucial step for standardizing diagnosis and enhancing patient care across borders. It's fascinating how collaborative efforts in research can lead to unified protocols that benefit clinicians globally.
