💯 I am in the tourism industry. But we still have a responsibility towards those who have no voice. Years ago, I was one of the first in the industry to take a public stand against elephant rides in Habarana. Then it was Pinnawala. What began with the best of intentions had, over the years, turned into little more than a zoo. None of these positions are easy. They may not even make commercial sense at the time but someone has to take a stand. I feel the same about the Perahera and the use of captive elephants. Not everything done in the name of tradition, culture or even religion can continue to be justified as society progresses and our understanding evolves. We must stand up to those defending an incumbent system simply because it has always existed, once we know that system is wrong and cruel. I genuinely believe we can modernise the Perahera and preserve it as the magnificent spectacle it is, without harming an innocent creature. #SriLanka #SystemChangeLK
