Chamath: Taiwan Loses Its Strategic Importance in 18 Months
@chamath:
“ We're 18 months from Taiwan not being an important moment of conversation the way it is today.
Why 18 months? Because we are at a point where we're probably 1-2 nanometers away from being able to do what we need Taiwan to strategically do for us.
And so as we scale up our chip fabs, as we get more capacity, and interestingly, there are these orthogonal technologies being developed.
I don't know if you guys saw, but Neuralink was showcasing a machine that is literally operating at the almost nanometer scale to do the brain operations for the implantation, all automatically.
When you have the dexterity and the capability mechanically to make these things, the real reason then is a very different one than what it is today.
Today, it's economic. And if you take that off the table, I think we'll have a very different attitude to Taiwan.”

Most allocators I meet with get most of their technology exposure through private equity and venture capital. That exposure is dominated by software, historically 90% or more. The key to not trailing the indices now is changing your market weights to semis. The allocator need to hire semiconductor specialist investors - it’s not a category for generalists, as there’s too much volatility more many investors’ tolerance.
This is absolutely shameful. Agents of a federal agency unnecessarily escalating, and then executing a defenseless citizen whose offense appears to be using his cell phone camera. Every person regardless of political affiliation should be denouncing this.

AI at scale needs optical I/O. #AyarLabs and Alchip are partnering to bring co-packaged optics into next‑gen AI and HPC platforms.
By combining #Alchip’s ASIC and advanced packaging with Ayar Labs’ CPO solutions, we’re enabling higher bandwidth, lower latency, and better power efficiency for hyperscalers.

I hope JD Vance watches this video.
Yesterday, JD Vance complained that his 3-year-old daughter was scared by a group of protesters shouting “Slava Ukraini.” He even went so far as to call some of them “sh*t.”
The hypocrisy in his statement is staggering. His and Trump’s actions are directly leading to Ukrainian children being killed daily by russian missiles and drones. Now, what would you call a person like that?!
The girl in the video lost her leg due to a russian attack. Yet she continues to smile, she continues to live. She is a symbol of the unyielding strength of the Ukrainian people who are fighting pure evil.

Unexpected and very fiery pro-Ukraine speech by Senator Tillis in the Senate on Wednesday, specifically mentioning Trump, drawing a contrast in their positions. He just got back from Ukraine. This is a positive, Trump needs the Senate to pass his budget:

In Washington, much is said about Taiwan quote “stealing the U.S. chip business”...this is not true. We need people in D.C. that know the difference between a Blackwell chip and potato chip. TSMC ($TSM) outperformed and outproduced its competitors such as UMC, Samsung, and SMIC to become the #1 outsourced manufacturer of leading edge semis.

AI5 performing well so far in January. AMD is still lagging.
Mag 7 underperforming due to Apple reports of sluggish iPhone sales in China and a slow start for its Apple Intelligence (AI) features. Also, Tesla is showing some fatigue even with its massive multiple on its bottoming out earnings estimates. Excitement for FSD and humanoid robotics is powering the former; auto volumes must lift the latter.

My AI5 basket performed extremely well in 2025, outperforming the Magnificent 7’s average performance (equal dollar weighted) in 2025 72.6% vs. 60.1%. The August pullback in semi stocks as well as the post election rally in Tesla allowed the Mag7 close the gap significantly headed into year end. Note: This is not investment advice.

The idea that Ukraine is ‘doomed’ because of USA politics is not a view shared here.
After speaking to hundreds of people in the streets of Kyiv today, most Ukrainians are completely defiant. “We will fight with or without America” - and that ok now it’s “time to work with Republicans and keep going forward”
Ukrainians have been fighting for their independence and freedom for well before this election and well before 2022. They keep moving. 🫡

I notice a few companies missing from the Reuters list of the firms trying to replace NVIDIA’s Cuda such as AMD and MSFT…those two have worked on replacing Cuda together for a while along with OpenAI. The UXL foundation is starting with Intel software? Ok, I will run right out there and bet my business on Intel software? Maybe not.
RT @GlenKacher: AI 5 update: +6.6% today for Broadcom (AVGO) takes its 22% YTD return higher than both AMD and MSFT YTD. #AI5
