From posts about the SIR and protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar to reports on government health schemes, creators say their Instagram content is being taken down with little explanation.
@SFLCin recorded 174 Instagram posts restricted in Oct.

Despite multiple reports from infosec researchers and letters from SFLC.in, several critical government websites are still serving certificates revoked by @eMudhra almost two weeks ago.
To help identify these websites and to make the scale of the issue transparent, we have compiled a list of government websites that have not renewed their certificates as of 30.10.2026.
Check out the list here: sflc.in/critical-government-…
If you come across a blocked government website with a certificate error (use @firefox!), let us know, and we will add it to the tracker!

SFLC.in is alarmed by reports that several Indian government websites are reportedly still using security certificates that eMudhra revoked and marked as 'superseded' on 19 October 2026.

My Instagram account with 80k followers was just suspended. How cowardly are Meta and this saffron regime of India? Before this, my Instagram account with 103k followers was banned in India by order of the government. This is a government stealing votes, cutting eligible voters — but they would rather sit and dedicate their resources to taking down political accounts and banning content. This phenomenon, of digital repression—if you will—is happening at an unprecedented level under the current BJP-RSS regime in India.

Replying to @shristhikhanna
@shristhikhanna's account has been suspended yet again on Instagram, but not a surprise. this is the third time. someone has been attacking her account with fake copyright claims, and i think after a certain number of copyright violations, Meta takes down your account. we were expecting this. same thing has happened to me. i am also getting fake copyright claims, and my posts are being taken down, so my account will probably also go. the emails that are shown in the screenshots are randomly putting my name or Maktoob Media’s handle as rightful owners of the content. it could be the IT Cell, the government, or any other random hater. please share this post. case for Shrishti’s main account, which was legally withheld at 103k, is already going on in the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, led by @internetfreedom.
if there’s any way you can help or have info, feel free to comment or DM.
SFLC.in is concerned about the scale and frequency of cybersecurity incidents and data breaches.
We call upon @IndianCERT, @RBI, and @GoI_MeitY to examine the country's cybersecurity infrastructure and review existing bank data security policies and measures. This requires urgent action to prevent further risks to citizens' sensitive personal and financial data.
SFLC.in will also be submitting a formal representation to the concerned authorities.

Last night IFF, @SFLCin and @geoblockedindia received a legal notice said to be issued purportedly on behalf of the RSS. It’s hard to believe this comes from an organisation that has had a century to practise its paperwork and hence this may even be a weird prank! This notice asks us to stop criticising the Government’s blocking orders and stop documenting them. It also wants us to confirm in writing within seven days (seriously).
We can tell it’s an excellent teaching aid and here are seven lessons from it.
1) Say who you are: The notice names no advocate and gives no enrollment number. It is signed by an “Authorised Signatory” with no name. Replies go to a free Proton Mail ID, and the “office” is a residential flat in outer Delhi. A notice that can’t tell you who sent it is less a legal document than a weather event.
2) Have a grievance of your own: It never says how its client is harmed when we criticise a MeitY advisory. It complains on behalf of the Government’s blocking orders. The Union has no shortage of lawyers, and it hasn’t asked for volunteers.
3) Name the law: It threatens “appropriate legal action” under “the applicable provisions of law” and doesn’t cite a single section of any statute. A threat with no law, is literally an empty threat.
4) Don’t ask people to give up a fundamental right within seven days: The first demand is that we stop “publicly opposing” government directions. In Shreya Singhal (2015), the Supreme Court held that discussion and advocacy of a cause, however unpopular, sit at the heart of Article 19(1)(a). Opposing an order is how its legality gets tested. That is the Constitution working as intended.
5) Check whether the courts asked for the thing you want stopped” In Anuradha Bhasin (2020), the Supreme Court held that orders restricting fundamental rights must be made available so people can challenge them. The Reddit order is on the public Lumen Database because Reddit put it there. Reading a public database and saying what’s in it has a name. It’s called research.
6) Show us the spark and the powder keg: The notice says our work weakens national security measures, but it gives no instance, date or harm. In S. Rangarajan (1989), the Supreme Court held that the danger feared from speech can’t be remote, conjectural or far-fetched. It has to be like a spark in a powder keg. A post about a Lumen filing is not a spark.
7) Read it once more before you press send: The paragraphs run 1, then an empty 2 and 3, then 4. A PIN code wanders into the facts. The account it targets is on “Twitter”.
Our reply is short. The notice is legally deficient because it makes no material allegation and cites no illegality. We will respectfully continue to advance constitutional rights, as we have done before. Notices like this rarely expect to win in court. They expect the recipient to get tired. We often are tired, but it has never changed what we do. Solidarity with @SFLCin and @geoblockedindia.
If your post or account has been blocked in India, write to legal@internetfreedom.in.
On the night of 29 October, SFLC.in, along with @internetfreedom and @geoblockedindia, received a legal notice from an advocate purportedly acting on behalf of the RSS.
The notice takes issue with SFLC.in’s Free Speech Tracker, which documents instances of online content restrictions and account takedowns in India. It alleges that by bringing these cases together in one place, we are helping people access restricted content through VPNs and circulate it further. The letter has called upon SFLC.in to stop documenting and publicising these instances “in a manner that helps people access and further circulate it.”

Our Free Speech Tracker exists because restrictions on online expression should not go unnoticed. Every entry represents someone's speech being limited, someone's voice being taken out of a public conversation. Documenting these instances is not an attempt to help people circumvent the law. It is about asking who is restricting speech, on what grounds, and whether those restrictions can be challenged.

The right to free speech also includes the right to question censorship, demand accountability and stand in solidarity with those whose voices are being silenced. We cannot allow intimidation, whether through suspicious legal notices or otherwise, to make documenting these violations more difficult.
We stand with everyone working to defend these freedoms. And we will continue doing what we have always done, standing up for people's rights and defending the space to speak freely.

This is a bizarre response from Meity. If it doesn't know whose orders have led to this, it should be pulling up Meta as to under whose orders is it doing mass censorship in India.

Instagram blocks another video of LiveLaw which explains the pending legal challenges against the SIR. (instagram.com/reels/DfFA7K_h…)
Two days back, Instagram had blocked a reel on the ECI's affidavit in the Supreme Court in the SIR case, before restoring it after a few hours.
The reason given for restricting the latest video is "We received a legal request to restrict this content".
The same video is available on YouTube : youtube.com/watch?v=-UN-u4ny…
Instagram removes the reel posted on LiveLaw's official page about the ECI's affidavit in the #SupremeCourt.
The reel, which was only an explanation of the ECI's version, was removed by Instagram saying, "We received a legal request to restrict this content".
There is no explanation how the reel (instagram.com/reel/De_dnDnOW…) violated any law.

This is what a digital emergency looks like. 👇
In just 29 days, SFLC.in’s Free Speech Tracker has recorded 351 cases of content and account restrictions.
That’s 268 cases involving content restrictions and 83 involving account restrictions across @Meta platforms, @X, @Reddit, and @YouTube. Among these platforms, Instagram saw the highest number of restrictions.
