A lot of mixed feelings about what's being reported in this great article from @nitashatiku; everything from my appreciation of @cajundiscordian, to my anger@ a few ppl in Google leadership, to my position as a relatively advanced researcher in this field. washingtonpost.com/technolog…

Well-organized, empathetic, and energetic (P)M's are the secret magic behind every collaborative effort. Whether your P stands for projects, products, programs, or pizza, we all need people who can kindly help us make sense of the chaos to use our skills and time effectively ✨

I can not tell you how many people and organizations believe that, because they have data, they are called to “do something” with it for “public good,” with no workable definition of either. It ignores the fundamental importance of limitations for safety and legal protections.
Replying to @jlev
The non-profit urge to serve an ambiguously articulated vision of progress because they possess data, broadly, is an enormous part of the problem - regardless of monetization or scale. IMO, the issue is impersonating legally protected relationships using tech w/"consent"

This old tweet feeling more and more relevant these days...
It’s seriously strange how we choose to dehumanize data but anthropomorphize AI systems. Algorithms do not have “intent” or “moral responsibility”. They do not “think”, or “learn” or “perceive”. That’s us - we do that and then project this behaviour unto the systems we create.

I am so glad to hear Brad Smith’s clear-eyed read of the need to fix where the internet fails people and society before moving our trash to the metaverse (paraphrasing/my read). h/t @setlinger for pointing me to this hopeful hot take on meta
