I love speaking with voice agents. There is something special about being able to brainstorm my ideas out loud using my voice. As great as voice agents sound, it still feels early. This is not new with technology innovation, and history actually helps here.
In 1830s, Britain’s railways had a problem: the coordination systems could not keep up with the pace at which the world was moving. Trains could move faster than messages. William Cook and Charles Wheatstone’s electric telegraph helped close the gap. It gave railways a signal that could travel ahead of the train, and allow information to arrive before the event.
The idea scaled, and telegraph lines crossed land and oceans while duplex systems allowed for signals move both ways. The same terminology is used in current voice innovations.
Today, machines can speak, but voice agents still feel odd. Is better coordination and judgement all voice agent need?

I can tell the OpenAI team has been cooking all day. Chatgpt “Work” on mobile has been improving throughout the day. It started with constant streaming interruption errors and now runs as smooth as butter. I can see and even take over its own browser session without issues. Super smooth.

I'm excited to see important voice-related releases from big players like Google, OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Qwen and NVIDIA, each covering a wide range of use cases like ASR, TTS and real-time. My favorite by far is the open model from NVIDIA.
Being able to experiment with these new models without relying on API costs, subscriptions or begging for limit resets is extremely valuable and healthy for the ecosystem.
