"Not custodial" is a claim. Here is how you check it.
Artisan says your balance sits in a self-custodial wallet, and that they cannot move, freeze or recover your funds. That is a stronger claim than most money apps are willing to make, and it is worth understanding what sits underneath it. Not because I doubt it, but because the mechanism has a consequence almost nobody mentions, and it should change how you use the product.
Start with what they publish.
Their documentation says the wallet belongs to you. It says they cannot spend your balance, lend it, pool it, freeze it, or hand it to anyone else. It also says that once you authorize a transaction, it is final, because they have no ability to reverse it.
Read that second half again.
The same property that stops Artisan freezing your money is the property that stops them undoing your mistake. You do not get one without the other. Every app that offers you a reversal is telling you, whether it means to or not, that it has the power to move your funds without you.
So how does it actually work?
The docs do not say. The wallet technology is not named anywhere in them. But Artisan lists Privy on their homepage as part of the stack, and Privy's embedded wallet architecture is published in full.
Here is the mechanism.
When you create an account, a private key is generated inside a trusted execution environment, a TEE, and split immediately into two shares using Shamir's Secret Sharing. Two of two. Both are required to reconstruct it.
The first share, the enclave share, stays inside the TEE and is only ever accessible there. The second, the auth share, is encrypted and held by Privy, released only after you authenticate.
Neither share reveals anything on its own. Privy holds one piece and cannot derive the key from it. The enclave holds the other and, by design, does not expose what is inside to anyone, Privy included.
When you sign a transaction, the sequence runs like this. You log in through a verified session. Privy issues short-lived authorization keys that expire quickly. The key is reassembled inside the enclave. It signs. Then it is wiped.
The complete key is never stored anywhere, in one piece, at rest.
So when Artisan tells you they cannot move your money, that is not a policy choice. It is structural. They are not holding a key, and there is no assembled key sitting anywhere for them to hold, hand over, or lose.
Now the part that matters to you.
If custody is enforced by authentication, then your custody is exactly as strong as your login. Not a seed phrase written on paper. Your email inbox, or the wallet app you signed in with.
Artisan's own documentation is blunt about this. If you lose your sign-in method and your recovery options, your funds may be permanently unrecoverable. Nobody can reset it, and that includes them. It also notes that the app cannot add a second way in yet.
That is the single most important operational fact about using this product, and it is sitting on a documentation page rather than in front of you at signup.
So if you use Artisan, go and secure the email account you signed up with. Today. Strong unique password, hardware key or app-based 2FA, recovery options you actually control. That inbox is now a wallet.
One more thing, and this is where the claim gets narrower than it first sounds.
Self-custodial describes Artisan's role. It does not describe the whole payment chain, and their docs say so directly. When you pay a bill, the money leaves your wallet and moves through licensed partners who handle the regulated legs, and while it sits on one of those legs, that partner holds it under their rules.
Your balance at rest is yours. Money in flight is somewhere else.
That is not a criticism. It is unavoidable. Duke Energy settles in dollars over bank rails, and somebody licensed has to carry it there. But non-custodial is a claim about the wallet, not about every second of the journey, and the difference matters when you are sizing up risk rather than reading marketing.
Two things I cannot verify, and will not pretend to.
Privy's published architecture does not state what happens to wallet access if Privy itself goes offline. The auth share lives with them.
And nothing I found, in Artisan's documentation or anywhere else, says whether you can export your private key and open that wallet somewhere else. For a product whose central promise is that the wallet is yours independently of the company, that is the question I would most want answered.

July 2024: Bangladesh switched off its internet. 170M people cut off. Freelancers lost days of income, and no insurer covers that.
So I built BLACKOUT: cover that pays when a government cuts the internet. @GenLayer validators decide. No claim to file. 🧵
