Hate to say it, but if the person in question is at least semi-decent at art, you probably can't. I can only speak for concept art, but intention and reasoning is a big factor. If a rookie can't walk you through their design reasoning and research, something fishy is going on.

And even my suggestion is flawed. Assuming the artist in question is actually decently capable and still resorting to this (convenience, laziness, time constraint, w/e), they will be able to retroactively explain a design process that never existed based on what they see.
