I'm gathering quotes from other game devs that help me in my project. Today's quote: "Games are pretty bad right until shortly before they are finished." Erik Wolpaw on @TheExaminedGame podcast.

Lately I've been thinking about how I will have spent 4 - 5 years on my game when it releases and it will probably not even make back the money I spent on it. Sounds frustrating, but I am trying not to be frustrated. I still want to finish the game and I think it's worth finishing. I will still create value for myself in form of everything I learned on this project. Like animating sprites in Spine 2D for example. 😄

They are posting this garbage as if they are proud of it.

I wish I could go back three years and bring a copy of my game with me to see if I would jave played and enjoyed it when I wasn't too deep in ithe making of it. I have no idea what I have here. #gamedev #indiegame

I think I need a publisher. I just hate how thinking about marketing has replaced so much brain space in my head previously reserved for thinking about game design and coding. #gamedev #indiegame

Even using hashtags in this post feels icky.

Today my godchild learned that I am making a video game. Now he wants to make one too. An open-world 3D super hero game with endless replayability and multiple playable characters with different abilities. He asked me if this is easy, medium or hard to develop. Yeah... #gamedev

Whelp, no working on the game for me today. My son spilled water on my setup and I am waiting for it to dry before trying to turn it on. Time to play some Switch games instead. Any recommendations?

When things fall into place with game design it can seem as if you had planned all this all along, which I so very much didn't. Iteration and playtesting is like the sea turning a jagged rock into a smooth pebble. #indiegame #gamedev

People will buy this, right? On the one hand, kudos to the dev for cathing that trend, but on the other hand: I don't understand the world anymore.
i made a game where you literally have to find a needle in a haystack the catch is there are 5,000,000 pieces of hay and only 1 needle

I avoided playing Slice and Dice for 2 years because I worried I would unconsciously copy from it to my own game. I finally played it and I think I was right to wait. What a great game, I am jealous!

I need to frame this
If you want to find success then picking the right game idea is absolutely crucial. Considering how you have an infinite amount of possible game ideas that could be done (but finite time), how do you know which ones are winners? First in terms of idea generation, personally I definitely write down ideas as soon as I have them, I have tons of .txt files with all sorts of potential ideas stored all over the place. Then in terms of figuring out what might be a good idea that has potential, it's basically looking at things that are trending, that's part of the reason why I keep doing my Top 10 New Steam Games videos every single month, I want to stay up to date with what is doing well. Then how do you validate the game idea? Idea validation is super crucial nowadays, that comes first of all from your own taste (which you gain by doing the research into whats hot) then by asking friends and family to play, then other people, then posting gifs of the game, etc. If you do all that and it's really hard to get people to play the game, or it's really hard for a gif of the game to get more than 10 views, then that's likely an indicator that the idea isn't as appealing as you might think. At that point, if your goal is financial success, it would be best to go back to the drawing board and pick a different idea with more potential. Whereas if you do all that and every gif of your game get 10k+ views and you have playtesters who play your game even without you asking, that's when you know you struck gold! - Code Monkey
