A pack of drunk Catholic University students just shoveled my walk for me. They called me ma’am and offered me a Coors Light. I feel both old and grateful…
Check out @tiacecaldwell and my latest blog taking a closer look at new (NEW!) #studentloan default data from @usedgov.
Almost half of those in default first had one of their loans enter default SEVEN+ YEARS AGO. (WTAF)

Recently @usedgov released some of the best data on student loan defaults in years (TY!). @sellensatt and I took a look… and it wasn't pretty.
One-third of those in default, 2.4 million people, have been in default for at least 7 or more ~consecutive~ years. [1/4]
My husband just called the Department of Education “DED,” and that is what I will be using going forward.

"It is really hard to come up with the right policy solutions when you don't understand which groups are most impacted." said @sellensatt w/ @NewAmericaEd.
We’re so excited to have you!

Fellow humans: I just had my first @BuceesUSA experience, and I have no words. I spent $100 and I don’t even know how or why.
Today, the delightful human to whom I have had the privilege to be married for ~8 years became a US citizen! I have many thoughts about our immigration system, but today I’ll say that I can’t think of anyone who better embodies the qualities I love about my country. The best day.

Many seniors have been trapped in #StudentLoan repayment for decades and now face default.
In the final piece in their blog series, our #HigherEd experts @tiacecaldwell and @sellensatt identify 7️⃣ policy solutions to provide relief for older borrowers.

The # of seniors w/student debt ⬆️500% in the last ~20yrs. Many remain trapped in debt w/low incomes + no end in sight.

Black Americans + women are disproportionately likely to owe college debt near retirement age. These pops are more often targeted by low-value schs that create unaffordable debt, have low family wealth, + face discrimination in the labor mkt, all making it harder to repay loans.
Compared to srs who already repaid their student loans and srs who never attended college, those still repaying their own loans are more likely to:
- Lack 3 months of emergency savings
- Have medical debt
- Receive govt food, housing, or cash assistance
