It began with tea. I have spent much of my life in the Chinese-speaking world: home in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan, seasons in mainland China and Singapore. Tea was always on the table. In time I followed it to the source, spending whole afternoons with farmers in the hills of Wuyishan. Then I went to see who made the cups.

A friend and I never travel without a board. Some games are played to win; ours is played to keep playing. Over the years we changed so many rules that we needed a game of our own. So I made one, for the pleasure of sitting across from someone you know well, and still being surprised by their next move.

It moves by shifting its own weight around inside! 🥎 MARBLE, from the General Robotics Lab at Duke University. A sealed sphere that rolls across land, propels itself on water, and has no external moving parts at all. Three mass sliders sit inside on mutually orthogonal axes. Moving them displaces the centre of mass away from the geometric centre of the shell, which creates a gravitational moment about the ground contact point, which rolls the ball. Three axes means it can do that in any direction. As the body rolls, the slider axes rotate with it, so the mapping from "go this way" to "put the sliders here" keeps changing. The controller has to be orientation-aware and re-solve continuously while the robot tumbles. The shell then does four separate jobs: ground contact surface, buoyancy, mounting for the passive fins, and sealed housing for everything that actuates. Rotating it rolls the robot on land and drives the fins on water. No reconfiguration between media. 🔗 Here's the project page: generalroboticslab.com/MARBL… ~~   ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news → ziegler.substack.com

BREAKING: the UK government publishes official rules on how to use AI: 1. Ask first if you really need to use AI 2. Check if a spreadsheet can do the job before using AI 3. Choose the worst model possible so it uses less energy 4. Keep prompts short to reduce the environmental impact 5. In general, use AI only when necessary, as a climate-saving measure With a mindset like this, we should accept the UK back into the European Union

Singularity achieved. The week Jev dropped is apparently “boring.”
So we’re already seeing testing for: Sonnet 5.2 Opus 5.2 Fable 5.2 Gemini 4 Pro And we have confirmation or hints of upcoming releases for: Grok 4.7 GPT-6-Sol (Sam and Tibo teased a big release on Tuesday, so this could be it) Kimi K3.1 (a vague post from Kimi seems to hint at 3.1) This week was pretty boring. But next week is probably gonna insane.
