Outage-causing scrapers are still putting a lot of pressure on our servers. Even if there’s no malicious intent, third-party tools often pull data from our site as fast as they possibly can. That can turn a single request into a huge amount of traffic for us to handle. It forces us to add stricter protections against automated access, which can make the experience worse for legitimate users. Worse, this DDoS-like scraping can cause outages and prevent everyone else from using the site.

RoyaleAPI has been facing a lot of bot attacks in the recent weeks, and so we’ve had no choice but to implement strong security measures. To understand the level of bot activity vs valid traffic, refer to this screenshot, which shows the number of requests (right column) where a security challenge was issued, and the % of requests that could solve that challenge (left column). That means a bot-to-human ratio is higher than 200:1, and for some pages, more than 3000:1. If we don’t put these security measures in, we would have to add 200x servers (and thus 200x server costs) to handle those requests. It simply won’t be possible.
