Why fund highly novel research? It can improve the evolution of knowledge by guiding future researchers. We propose a model in which researchers decide which questions to address and at what intensity to search for the answer based on existing knowledge. econometricsociety.org/publi…

When I was in 3rd year of PhD, I read every paper published in AER, QJE, JPE from 2000-2020, bc I wanted to get a sense of what everyone was working on. It took I think 3 full time months, spread out over half a year or so? Was great and gave me a bunch of useful perspective
A memorable moment in new employee training for me was when the trainer said that most people working professionally in our field could not whiteboard out funds and data flow between all entities in a credit card transaction. She asked why I could, given no experience in industry

Happy to share our new work in experimental design! Given experiment subjects with potentially heterogeneous covariates and two possible treatments, namely active treatment and control, our work arxiv.org/pdf/2410.05552 quantifies the optimal accuracy in estimating the treatment effect and proposes an experimental design that approaches this optimal accuracy, giving a first (non-asymptotic) answer to this fundamental question. Also we propose an extremely practical and efficient experiment design compared to existing ones. Looking forward to any comments, suggestions or potential applications in practice!
