⚙️ This International Repair Day, let’s talk about repairability as an important aspect of e-waste prevention. Electronics designed for durability remain in use for longer, reducing the need for raw materials to produce new devices. 🧵 1/2

🤔 How do we know how much e-waste a country actually generates? It takes more than counting discarded devices! We also need to look at the equipment put on the market, how long products are used, and available import and export data. 🧵

🤝 Under @theGEF ISLANDS Programme, we at @scycleunitar worked with 11 Caribbean countries to assess e-waste generation, collection and treatment, identify data gaps and explore ways to improve national e-waste management.

📈 From one third to two thirds. The Netherlands has made significant progress in e-waste collection and treatment, but challenges remain. In 2024, 255,000 tonnes of WEEE were formally collected and treated, almost 40% more than in 2018. 🧵

👉🏻 Yet an estimated 103,000 tonnes of e-waste remained outside the formal collection and treatment system in 2024. Formal collection reached 68.5% of e-waste generated, still below the national target of 85%.

📋 We published a letter in Science calling for an end to the dumping of low-quality used electronics and textiles in Africa. Items with no reuse value should not be shipped as “second-hand” goods only to become waste. 🔗 Read the letter here: science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

SCYCLE helps close this gap. By building global e-waste monitoring and analysing material flows, we help turn discarded electronics into a resource and support countries in setting up functioning collection, reuse, and recovery systems. 🔗 unitar.org/about/news-storie…
