I believe two things can be true at once. Once his face was disfigured, he spent months isolated from the world with Caitlyn being his only form of connection. And not only did she heal him physically, but also emotionally. She was kind and patient with him after the entire world had disgraced him. In a way she’s his emotional support and hero of sorts. It’s why he’s at ease when he dreams of her because that’s the only peace he knows. But on that same note, he’s obsessed with her. She makes his life complete and he wants her all to himself. Just like he wants all the glory and love to himself. Instead of loving her enough to respect her wishes and hope she’s happy with her fiancé, he takes that option away from her and wants her to only be happy with him- even if he has to pretend to be someone else. It’s a toxic love, but a love nonetheless.
