Jews made up roughly four to five percent of the population of the Russian Empire. In the first years of Bolshevik rule they occupied a far larger share of the decisive posts.
Two weeks before the October 1917 seizure of power, Lenin convened a secret Central Committee meeting. Of the twelve men present, six were Jews. The seven-member Politburo formed to direct the takeover included four Jews: Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, and Sokolnikov.
These figures are drawn from standard histories by Richard Pipes, William Chamberlin, and Harrison Salisbury. They are not disputed by serious specialists.
