NEMETH: Ottawa’s leaked EU deal strangles Alberta’s resources and sovereignty with regulations
westernstandard.news/opinion…
No wonder Alberta wants to leave.
Not one road. Not one doctor.
Finance Canada's Fiscal Monitor says Ottawa ended 2025-26 with a $55.3 billion deficit. On the same basis, the year before was $43.2 billion. (The audited 2024-25 figure later came in at $36.3 billion.)
Even without a $13.7 billion accounting charge for public-service pensions and benefits, the deficit was still $41.6 billion.
Public debt charges came to $53.7 billion, about the same as the year before.
These are preliminary numbers. The final figures come out in the Public Accounts.
That $53.7 billion didn't build anything. It paid for the last time Ottawa ran out of money.

October 19 is not a vote to declare independence. It is a decision about whether to begin a process that could lead to a future independence referendum.
CPAC challenged me on the implications. Here’s how I responded:

This is outrageous:
"The government also plans to remove the requirement for an employer to prove they can’t find a qualified Canadian for those jobs."
"The government is also introducing a temporary policy to remove the requirement for an employer to include a Labour Market Impact Assessment for a qualifying job that’s eligible for the new express entry points."

Mississippi is now richer than us.
The World Bank puts Canada’s 2025 GDP per person at US$55,698. Mississippi, the poorest state in America, sits around US$55,877.
That puts us below all 50 states.
In 2014 the New York Times found Canada’s middle class had caught up to America’s. A year later the liberals took over.
Ten years of liberals. Fifty states ahead of us.

I want a better future for my kids.
That's why I'm voting option #2.
Confederation is a failed experiment, and the eastern provinces will never give us a fair deal. Why would they?
Independence is the only path forward for Alberta.

…when Carney gave Ukraine $4.5 Billion…
…AND THEN *TOTALLY* UN-COINCIDENTALLY BROOKFIELD RECEIVED A HUGE REBUILDING CONTRACT?
(That was weird 🥴)

What does Option 2 actually give Alberta? Keith Wilson’s answer is leverage.
He explains why he sees October 19 as a chance to seek a better relationship with Ottawa, with any future independence vote remaining a separate choice.

Unemployment is the second HIGHEST in the G7.
Labour participation is the WORST in 30 years.
Carney promised the strongest economy in the G7—he's delivered the WEAKEST.
Carney's rhetoric NEVER matches reality.

Read that list again and check how many Ottawa has already done.
In October 2022 the government froze the sale and transfer of handguns.
Not for criminals. For licensed owners.
In February 2022 it used the Emergencies Act to freeze the bank accounts of people who protested.
380,000 new permanent residents a year through 2028.
Europe went down this road first. We're following it.

Canada’s invocation of the Emergencies Act was found to be illegal.
Alberta’s public health orders were found to be illegal.
Governments demanded compliance of the vax “for the public good.” Then they abandoned the injured.
Where are the consequences for those in power?
Where is the recognition of the harm done to the people?
How do those involved have the audacity to lecture citizens about responsibility when they have yet to answer for their own decisions?
And how are we supposed to trust leaders who demand accountability from everyone but themselves?
You cannot convince me they are working for the people while they fight so hard to avoid accountability and refuse to acknowledge those harmed.
Public office is not a shield from consequences. Those who refuse to answer for their mistakes or the harm they caused have no business holding power or lecturing the rest of us about right and wrong.

For @CoryBMorgan , the pipeline isn’t the real issue.
Alberta’s dispute with Ottawa runs much deeper, from equalization and immigration to the Senate and how federal power works.
“The pipeline was just a symbol.”
