With an extra 45-60 seconds, the Commanders don't need to spike the ball early and set up 3rd-and-uncomfortable. They don't end up in the intentional grounding situation. Maybe they lose anyway, but at least they'd have had a chance. It's intensely frustrating and self-inflicted.
It's just extremely disappointing when you consider the already-uphill climb against a really good team with injuries affecting gameplay ability. Jayden Daniels was exceptional today but he can't overcome his coaching staff robbing him of that many chances.
A team that cannot win on the merit of its personnel needs to be excellent in the coaching and game management margins. Some teams win with talent and lose in the playoffs due to coaching. The best teams — Shanahan's 49ers, MacDonald's Seahawks — do both. Washington does neither.
There were a lot of glaring coaching mistakes today so this will not be as noticed. But it is a DISASTROUS play that shows a lack of attention to detail. Yes, this is hard to think of on the fly. But you make millions to be sharp and forward-thinking here.
Assuming the defense stands up as it did, you end up getting the ball back with ~1:45 and no timeouts. Since Washington didn't have the 2-minute warning on its side, they ended up getting the ball back with under a minute to go. That 50 second difference is an eon.
If you go short pass-short pass two things happen
1) You complete 1 of the 2, the drive continues and worrying about the defensive clock is postponed.
2) You complete neither pass, it takes less than 16 seconds and the defense takes the field with 2 TOs AND the 2-minute warning
This play is a coaching disaster.
With 2:16 remaining and only two timeouts, you have to be thinking far enough ahead to consider what happens if you don’t convert. You need the two-minute warning. This run kills any chance of that. (Cont)
My hot take for this upcoming season is that it's more likely that JSJ stays in college for another year than it is that he goes top-3.
