Former DOGE official Tyler Hassen is pushing back on the public image of Elon Musk and the team, offering a sharply different account of what he says actually happened behind closed doors. Hassen says Musk was so consumed with solving problems that he sometimes slept on the floor of a nearby office. He also describes DOGE staff going through thousands of contracts and grants, asking officials to “defend the spend” and explain what was mission critical. Hassen acknowledges DOGE didn’t accomplish everything it set out to do, but argues the experience exposed deeper problems inside government operations. Every Senate Democrat votes no on two issues with overwhelming support from voters. Republicans get 53 votes to advance a bill combining a congressional stock trading ban with nationwide voter ID requirements, but fall seven votes short of the 60 needed to move forward. Chuck Schumer says Republicans deliberately attached a voter ID "poison pill" to a stock trading bill they knew Democrats would oppose. Republicans argue Democrats just blocked action on two issues voters have repeatedly said they support. And with the November midterms closing in, the political stakes are only getting higher.
