More hypocrisy from this @NYCCouncil as @TyHankerson signs on to the carriage horse ban while horseback riding recently. PETA, who @speakerjuliemenin has made a point of thanking for their help with the ban effort, even though their history includes the disgusting “Holocaust on Your Plate” campaign of yore, is against all human relationships with horses—horseback riding included. So Hankerson has just abused a horse while simultaneously taking a stand against horses. The Council is even discussing banning Mounted Patrol. This Council is shaping up to be one of the most irresponsible and hypocritical in decades. instagram.com/reel/Dek1izQJh… @twu @TWULocal100

Under-investigation CM Chris Marte announced on Spectrum News that they are planning to eliminate Mounted Patrol next. Hope @NYPDCentralPark @NYPDnews @nypost @NYDailyNews @nytimes @NYPDPC knows. That means even more land for the real estate cabal funding the carriage horse ban effort. This is what happens when Allie Feldman, former head of NYCLASS, takes control of the Animal Welfare office at City Hall, even though she regularly harassed and demonized the carriage horse workers for years. @NYCMayor, you’re being played.

2 PEOPLE were killed by not-horses in Central Park in the last 3 weeks. One a pedestrian hit by a racing cyclist and another a cyclist killed when he went over the handlebars after hitting an off leash dog. There’s been no effort to ban either racing pelotons or off leash dogs.

But…. You’re voting to seize 68 carriage medallions, shuttering small businesses and destroying people’s life savings and generational wealth?
(And INT 943A doesn’t even “help” horses… it just renders them homeless and unprotected by city regulations.)
Walker Blankinship retweeted
This does not look good for the Council. Why this is their first big “safety” initiative makes zero sense and reeks of political favoritism. Don’t destroy people’s lives and jobs and act as if you are doing something good. @NYCCouncil @SpeakerMenin @NYCMayor @TWULocal100
Broken Promises, No Worker Protections
If the NYC Council bans horse-carriage rides, hundreds of blue-collar drivers, owners, and their family members will be financially ruined and emotionally devastated. Jobs that now enable workers to put food on the table, pay the rent, and send their kids to college will be eliminated. At least 68 small businesses will be forced to shutter at a time when small businesses are going under left and right.
Council Speaker Julie Menin promised the legislation banning carriage horses would protect workers and horses. Intro 943 fails on every level. It has no funding, mandates, or guarantees. The bill merely says an unspecified city agency should draft a plan next year with weak measures like job fairs and counseling. There’s no mechanism to ensure horses won’t wind up being neglected or sent to the glue factory. Council members should reject Intro 943. The blue-collar workers and their beloved horses deserve better. @twusamuelsen @CMAmandaFarias @CMMercedesCD46 @Lynn4NYC @CMCrystalHudson @CnDelarosa @vmmaloney @CMNantashaW @OsseChi @CMSandyNurse @CMFarahLouis @CMJustinSanchez @PhilWongNYC @CMCarlWilson

This is an excellent piece on the carriage horse ban and the many lives negatively impacted for simply loving and caring for horses. We live in an age where lying and false narratives have been accepted because the internet makes that easy. @NYCMayor and @NYCCouncil’s dereliction of duty and hypocritical treatment of these workers, while elevating the voices of special interest groups and animal rights extremists, is appalling. @twu @TWULocal100 @SpeakerMenin @nytimes foxnews.com/politics/mamdani…

@SpeakerMenin said: “Horse-drawn carriages have long been part of New York City’s history, but in an increasingly busy Central Park, this tradition has become a growing public safety liability.”
The stats show that over the last 5 years there have been almost no serious accidents involving the public. It’s the “increasingly busy” part that should be the real focus. It means there are no plans to lessen the amount of commercial e-bikes and motorized vehicles over the next two years. @NYCCouncil @transportworker @TWULocal100 @Lynn4NYC @NYCMayor @nytimes

The horses are not suffering or abused. But ending the carriages and they will end up dead.

A lot of insane comments here. Whatever your view, it's worth remembering that ending New York City's horse carriage industry is an issue with support across the political spectrum. The issue is also one of the strangest rabbit holes in city politics.
