ACTUALLY 🧐 There is a difference between maricón and marico/a. Maricón is closer in meaning to "fagg0t" and it's often used directly as an insult (for example, in Mexico and Central America, it's mostly an insult) or as an adjective for coward (no seas maricón!= don't be a coward!), but it also depends on context, as some people from the LGBTQ+ community have reclaimed the word. If there's enough trust, you might use it with friends.
Now, marico/a is more known for being used in Venezuela and Colombia, and it is closer in meaning to "dude, bro, buddy, even ' he or she '." And people use it in a variety of different contexts, from talking to a friend to expressing anger, excitement, etc. It still has a homosexual undertone and can be an insult DEPENDING ON CONTEXT.
