Marriage isn't simply the next step on the relationship ladder. It is a conscious commitment that your partner can rely on you, and knowing beyond any doubt that you can rely on them.
Marriage takes work, absolutely. But I believe in working hard at work worth doing.

We endorse Darshini Patel for District 8 Supervisor. She’s outcome-driven, reads the research, and thoughtfully engages on complex issues. She’s strongly pro-housing and will fight for more shelter and drug treatment facilities that the city needs.

People who post BART's cost per unlinked trip "explosion" purport to be fiscally literate watchdogs, but it's the opposite: They don't understand businesses with high fixed & low marginal cost
BART spending hasn't spiked; lower ridership just mechanically raised cost per trip

Only a tiny fraction of the world’s mosquito species prey on humans. All of these are invasive across essentially their entire range, having tagged along with humans as we moved around the world. Multiple careful studies say that eliminating these species would have little or no impact on the environment. However, it would save at least a million human lives a year, and get rid of a constant source of discomfort that prevents people from safely spending as much time outside as they would prefer. Malaria is only one of dozens of diseases, many potentially fatal, spread by mosquitoes. Gene drives can safely and relatively inexpensively eliminate these parasitic insects; we can create male mosquitoes that can only have male offspring and which then crash the population. It’s well past time that we did it.
We should eradicate mosquito species that bite humans
Bit by bit we are fixing San Francisco! Thank you Supervisor @bilalmahmood
Did you know if you tried to open a Trader Joe's, Grocery Outlet, or soon even a Mollie Stone's in San Francisco - you can't?
That's because SF has a rule that formula retail chain stores that have more than 11 stores (worldwide!) can not open in commercial districts without a conditional use permit.
With grocery stores and pharmacies closing across our city, these permits can delay opening new stores by 6-9 months - delaying much needed affordable food in our neighborhoods.
So today I announced legislation to fix it.
Going forward, any parcel already designated as a formula retail chain can convert to a grocery store or pharmacy without an additional conditional use permit. This will save them months on opening.
For any new grocery store that opens, we will also allow them to include a bank, pharmacy, or restaurant without the need for another conditional use permit. As grocery stores consolidate and get smaller, this will help them occupy larger spaces while also bring more needed services to neighborhoods in need.
And lastly, we will add grocery stores and pharmacies to the city's priority processing list.
Importantly, this legislation isn't going to change the character of your neighborhood. It only regulates parcels that are already designated for formula retail chains. Because amidst an affordability crisis restricting access to food and medicine, we need to make it easier to open needed services. Not bury them in red tape.
Thank you Supervisors Sherrill and Melgar for your early cosponsorship of our legislation. We will introduce it at the Board of Supervisors in the weeks ahead, and expect it to pass before the end of the year.
He's absolutely right, and GrowSF did it first
🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right
This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.
“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”
“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”
Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.
Similar to the Zones of Thought series, is there any SciFi that explores intelligence-as-limited-resource? IE imagine there's a maximum amount of intelligence allowed by an as-yet-undiscovered field, and the advent of AI depletes it, so the AI race turns into zero-sum.

This is exactly right:
My takeaway from the NHJ discourse is that America continues to be unreasonably polarized between people who think the only thing that matters is the other students and the only thing that matters is funding.
Managing the school is important!

San Francisco now has more tools to crack down on dangerous sideshows.
A new state law I worked on with Assemblymember Catherine Stefani has been signed by Governor Newsom. It will help law enforcement deter people from performing dangerous stunts on our streets that put the public at risk, and it strengthens consequences for repeat offenders.
This state law:
- Adds motorbikes and dirt bikes to the sideshow framework, closing enforcement gaps
- Makes serious bodily injury caused by a driver in a sideshow felony-eligible
- Authorizes vehicle impoundment upon conviction for sideshow-related offenses, with increased accountability for repeat offenders
Crime numbers are down across the city, but numbers don't mean anything if San Franciscans don’t feel safe, and stopping sideshows will help both. With this new law, we are sending a clear message: Dangerous sideshows have no place in our neighborhoods, and we will use every tool available to stop them. I want to thank Assemblymember Stefani for her leadership and Governor Newsom for helping us give law enforcement the tools they need to keep San Franciscans and Californians safe.

Some personal news.
First, the bad news: The close the 2025-26 California legislative session yesterday marked my last day as the senior director of legislation and research at California YIMBY.
It was a disappointing session to end on—more on that to come—but I'm extremely proud of our achievements during my tenure. California YIMBY played a key role in:
✅ Finally passing a statewide transit-oriented multifamily upzoning—fulfilling the dream of SB 827 a decade later with SB 79.
✅ Helping to finally get a clean CEQA exemption for infill housing—a so-called "third rail" that went from impossible to inevitable.
✅ Building a robust framework for townhouse and small-lot subdivisions statewide in the form of SHRA, AKA SB 684-1123.
✅ Passing over a dozen bills making it easier to build ADUs, speeding up permit reviews and inspections, and adding certainty to the development process.
In addition to our sponsored bills, we were quietly involved in well over 100 other bills—supporting pro-housing bills and killing anti-housing bills. It was a lot of 60 hour weeks, but every second was worth it.
In addition to my team, I'm extremely grateful to the legislators who carried all of these bills, the staff who worked on them, and the organizations who partnered with us.
I'm also grateful to the movement that had our back—even in a state as captured by special interests and bureaucracy as California, progress is still possible when you combine good ideas with passionate advocacy.
California still has a long way to go toward ending the housing crisis. But the reforms we passed these past few years will pay dividends for years to come.
I can assure you that California YIMBY is in extremely capable hands going forward. But I'll let the relevant folks make their own announcements.
The big existential question facing my career going forward is, how could I possibly be a part of something bigger than any of this? Well...
