It is completely unacceptable for the The University of Sydney to allow a student political group to run for council elections under the banner, “Globalise the Intifada”. This is an explicit term calling for a violent uprising against Jews by people who have made public their support for Hamas. The Bondi Massacre last December in which 15 innocent people lost their lives is exactly what ‘Globalise the Intifada’ means for Australia. This is a line in the sand. In the face of this explicit call for violence on Australian soil our Prime Minister cannot remain on the sidelines; the NSW Premier whose heart has been in the right place on these issues cannot remain too timid; and the University of Sydney Vice Chancellor who did not do enough to protect students and staff from harassment and hate after October 7 cannot remain in denial. It’s high time for our leaders to act with the courage, moral clarity and strength our country urgently needs. There can be no if’s or but’s. This move to normalise the dangerous and deadly term ‘Globalise the Intifada’ must be stopped. After the deadliest terrorist attack in Australia’s history and with a Royal Commission into antisemitism currently underway one would think there would be no need to bring attention to this issue. But the fact there is shows how much more work we all need to do to become more cohesive as a society and how much better our leaders need to be at upholding their first and fundamental duty to all citizens, keeping us safe.
