The Old Cornish Accent: This video is a wonderful view into the old Cornish accent and spirit. This fascinating interview of 77 year old Cornish maid Emanda Billings in 1964 is a great insight into the everyday life of our recent ancestors. She was born in Victorian England (1800s), a world in which we've lost all connection. The Cornish accent (also called Anglo-Cornish or Cornu-English) developed as local Celtic speakers shifted to English between 1300 and 1750, adopting regional West Country English while keeping a strong Brittonic language substrate. ⏳️

The number of independent bookshops in Britain and Ireland is at a 14-year high. This follows a mini-resurgence in book buying, which, some research suggests, is being driven by young people. In these days of digital overload, this is a hugely encouraging development. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c95y…

“And so the great experiment begun by Granada Television in 1964 is over. That year, Seven Up! introduced the viewing public to 14 primary school children – 10 boys and four girls from a range of backgrounds – who would become part of an ongoing documentary project…”. – Lucy Mangan of the guardian Towards the end of 70up there is archive footage of the 7 year olds as they play in 1964 . Douglas Keay narrates “At the end of our special day in London we took our children to an adventure playground where they could do just what they liked. Those from the childrens home set about building a house: Paul”. The film moves to Paul in the playground and then cuts to Paul as a man living in Australia, aligning bricks and building a house. The voice over returns and the film returns to the archive in the playground of a boy digging a trench “and Symon” The film cuts to Symon Basterfield as an adult laughing with his wife and some of the one hundred and twenty children they have fostered over the years. At the end Symon speaks to the film “My story is special because it’s been seen”. Is being seen is what family is all about?

Today, @BASW_UK issued an unreserved apology for its role in the historic forced adoption of unmarried mothers from 1949 to 1976. Whilst a welcome first step, it excludes adoptees, extended families, and those falling outside of Adoption Act chronology. basw.co.uk/articles/basw-iss…

A deeply moving and intensely personal read in the @guardian from @David_Batty about his experience of adoption, reconnection and extended family identities. The ongoing, lifelong impacts of severance are both incredibly profound and deeply felt. theguardian.com/society/2026…

British radio required one of The Beautiful South’s cheekiest lyrical rewrites when “Don’t Marry Her” became a single. The original recording contained language that daytime broadcasters could never play, so its notorious chorus was cleaned up, while another line was humorously changed to reference “Sandra Bullocks”. Written by Paul Heaton but sung by Jacqui Abbott, the track came from the band’s 1996 album Blue Is the Colour and reached No. 8 in the UK. This December 1996 Top of the Pops appearance naturally used the censored version, while anyone who owned the album knew the considerably less polite original.

That’s what I love about Paul Heaton - he does like like a bloke coming out of the Co-op with carrier bags but has the voice of an angel! 👼
Just watching Paul Heaton on the @BBCiPlayer and enjoying every second. Missed it on Sat 8th Aug 2026. My partner and youngest lad watched it, with my boy saying “he doesn’t look like a musician, he looks more like a guy coming out of the Co-op with carrier bags. @PaulHeatonSolo
