MoD Piddington and ECHR
It is very disappointing that Labour Ministers would not go to Piddington, so our leader Kemi Badenoch brought Piddington to Parliament.
I was pleased to see them in the Public Gallery as I raised their concerns and those of women in South Northamptonshire.
We need the powers to regain control of our borders and that means leaving the ECHR - the interpretation of which has gone far beyond what its creators could have imagined. For as long as the European Court of Humans Rights regards the ECHR as a “living document”- we will have problems.

Tonight, Labour MPs voted AGAIN for the Family Farm Tax and Family Business Tax.
Eight chances to do the right thing. Eight times they chose to hammer farmers and family businesses.
Labour must listen. At the Budget, axe these vindictive taxes.
The Prime Minister has to be very careful with his words - the world is listening and his words can have serious repercussions…
Why is he wanting to reopen the Brexit debate when he said to his constituents he wouldn’t. Dynamic alignment is a problem.
What people want is help now - not at some theoretical point in the future.

At PMQs @KemiBadenoch asked the PM if he was tired of putting his foot in his mouth.
20 mins later and it’s not just another gaffe but a comment that appears to prejudge a murder investigation.
I have written to the Attorney General in the hope that she can remind the PM of his legal obligations.

Reflecting on an excellent and busy conference - taking part in panels, meeting charity groups and making the case for the work of our Justice team.
@KemiBadenoch’s closing speech set out a clear vision for our country and an agenda to deliver it.
Now…back to Parliament tomorrow, ready to hit the ground running and do things 'The Right Way'!

I am absolutely devastated that the Secretary of State has approved Green Hill Solar Farm.
So many of you have worked tirelessly to oppose this application. This was never about being against renewables - this is the wrong application in the wrong place.
The Government has acknowledged that arable farmland will be taken out of production for at least 60 years yet finding alternative sites is apparently too “complicated”. That is simply not good enough.
We should be putting solar panels on warehouse rooftops before sacrificing good quality agricultural land. Food security is part of our national security and must not be brushed aside in the rush to meet net zero targets.
We now need to take stock and consider our next steps. I will be seeking answers on community benefit funding and what happens next and will keep you updated.
Birmingham Tapestry #CPC26: my reaction 🥀😱
@Conservatives
It's all good fun and games but 'Andy Burn'em' is not one I want to play in reality! 🎮
I have really enjoyed meeting the organisations here at #CPC26, hearing about their work and having the chance to ask questions. Thank you to everyone who took the time to chat.

Day 2 at #CPC26! 🇬🇧
A day of farming, justice and business!
Two excellent panels for the Society of Conservative Lawyers - attending both as Chair and in my role as Shadow Minister for Justice, discussing access to justice, the rule of law and the economy.
Showing my support for British farming as always with the @NFUtweets and our food and drink producers too.
From motor racing to the Bayeux Birmingham Tapestry - a little bit of everything here in Birmingham 🏎️
@Conservatives
What a start to #CPC26! 💙
It was great to hear @KemiBadenoch opening remarks and I have enjoyed catching up with the team and speaking to so many members from across the country.
Conference is certainly keeping me busy.
I look forward to sharing more with you, so watch this space!

This is completely unacceptable - I raised this with the Lord Chancellor well before the releases began asking how many would be tagged and I still haven’t had a response. This is irresponsible.
BREAKING:
Alex Norris, the justice secretary, is unable to say how many of those who have been released early from prison have been tagged
The government had said that there would be a 'presumption on tagging' for those being released
Given that tagging is **the central tenet** of the public safety assurance from the government this seems a pretty extraordinary omission at this stage
We are now several days into the early release programme and yet this basic information is not available. Doesn't feel like a sustainable position
Norris tells @bbclaurak: 'I don't have that figure today - it only happened on Thursday. There can be a bit of a lag. It can take a bit of time. But for the first time ever there is that presumption'
Q: So you don't know how many people who have been tagged, who include domestic abusers?
A: It would be too soon to know that as it was only on Thursday. With regard to domestic abuse we would have liked to have gone further
He says that 'day four is too soon to ask me for those numbers' - is it?

Labour start releasing criminals from prison today.
Because of their chaotic decision-making there will be two releases in October alone.
Ministers said they’d all be tagged - but now admit that’s not true.
The probation service says it will be overwhelmed - but ministers ignored them.
Prison governors say they can’t prepare so many for release to a proper address - but they were ignored too.
There are 700 fewer prison cells than last year.
1,600 fewer prison officers than since the election.
No new prisons planned or approved under Labour.
But there are still more than 4,000 operational prison places available.
There are another 3,000 that could be found by doubling and fully using existing cells.
And another 4,600 that could be used but aren’t because of repairs, staff shortages and even bed bugs.
Dartmoor Prison sits empty - because it’s exposed to natural levels of radon gas thousands of locals live with all the time.
Labour say this is unavoidable. But they haven’t fought to keep prisoners locked up. They just opened the prison doors.
They don’t have it in their DNA to be tough on crime - and the public will pay the price.

Over 100 Conservative MPs have called for answers and action after the shambolic managment of SFI26 👇
Following reports that the majority of early release victims will be not be tagged before walking out of prison, I have written to the Government to ask why their flagship policy of tagging is not now taking place.

What an absolute farce. Labour have literally orchestrated a bun fight in front of our very eyes, pitching farmers against one another.
I am completely incensed at the pure incompetence of this government. Through their choices, Labour Ministers have literally designed a scheme around who can hit the ‘apply’ button first.
DEFRA didn't even have the decency to tell farmers the scheme was opening at 10am this morning. And now, just over five hours later, all the budget is gone. It's utterly shameful.
No doubt Labour will spin this as a great victory. But it isn’t.
Tens of thousands of farmers have missed out, simply because they couldn’t get their application completed fast enough, or they were busy doing other important things - like farming!
This is no way to run a hugely important scheme. It is not in the best interests of our farmers, or the environment.
I am deeply worried about the further financial and emotional strain this government has chosen to create, especially when many farming families are under so much pressure already.
The government was warned by many, but refused to act.
Labour clearly don’t give a damn.
Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 (SFI26) closed at 15:48. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit an application.

The Government have said that tagging would be the bedrock of their early release scheme
Now it turns out the majority of those being released next month will not even be fitted with monitoring tags before they are freed.

Just last week I had challenged the Government on how effective tagging was given the National Audit Office raised that only 10-50% of alerts result in breach notifications and where outcomes are even recorded nearly half result in “no further action”
A poorly run system superseded by no system it turns out…

Today I had my debut as Shadow Minister at Justice Oral Questions 🗣️
I pressed the Government on falling probation officer numbers, thousands of offenders released early and serious gaps in electronic tagging enforcement.
The National Audit Office has found that only 10 to 50% of tagging breach alerts result in a breach notification and where outcomes are even recorded, nearly half result in no further action.
That is simply not good enough when public safety is on the line.
I asked the Minister directly: can she guarantee that in the next year, every tagging breach will come with consequences?
