MPs’ salaries should not be left entirely to MPs to decide, allowing them to award themselves whatever amount they wish.
Instead, their salaries should be tied to the national basic salary, perhaps capped at 3 or 4 times that amount.
That way, MPs’ salaries would increase only when the basic salaries of ordinary Maldivians increase.
If MPs want a pay rise, they must first work towards improving the incomes of the people they represent.

That’s nearly 30% raise.
