New: Lauren Davila made a stunning discovery as a graduate student at the College of Charleston: an ad for a slave auction larger than any historian had yet identified. The find yields a new understanding of the enormous harm of such a transaction. propublica.org/article/how-g…

"Impoverished Caribbean islands have delivered wealth to larger powers for centuries, and today is no exception ... Postcolonialism barely had a chance to take hold before it gave way to climate colonialism."
There are poor countries with more debt, and there are island countries in the Pacific facing more imminent climate threats, but nowhere in the world do debt and climate vulnerabilities overlap as they do in the Caribbean. My latest. nytimes.com/interactive/2022…

"We're slammin' up cameras everywhere," the police pitched last month.
Tonight, North Charleston City Council is voting to create a 24/7 police surveillance center monitoring a network of automatic license plate readers and 800+ cameras w/ facial recognition tech. Sign up by NOON today to speak out against it. A thread: northcharleston.org/governme…
Do you commute through North Charleston? Cops say license plate readers at entrances to the city and pumped up surveillance on I-26 are part of their proposed dragnet. Like much of the plan, details are unclear.

On 4/21, police pitched the idea for a "Joint Operations Center" to the city's Finance Committee and received no pushback. The request includes 34 Rekor license plate readers, 745 Mercator cameras, a Fusus surveillance dashboard, and Constant Technologies video wall.
