The day they visited Daniel’s family, the entire journey felt unusually silent. A light rain fell across the streets of Kigali, and Aline kept tightening her hands nervously.
When they arrived, Daniel’s mother welcomed them politely, but there was something uncomfortable in the way she looked at Aline.
Daniel’s father also spoke very little.
During dinner, the questions began.
“So, Aline,” Daniel’s mother said with a small smile, “what exactly do you do for a living?”
Aline answered respectfully, but somehow every answer she gave seemed to disappoint some members of the family.
Daniel could feel the tension growing. He tried changing the conversation several times, but the atmosphere only became heavier as the hours passed.
After they left, Aline stayed unusually quiet.
“I’m sorry,” Daniel finally said.

Daniel didn’t know what to say.
