I believe we need to make a deliberate effort to keep humans in the loop in all critical processes across our economy and society, regardless of whether it is technically necessary.
Even if AI develops the *capability* for advanced autonomy, we should not make it highly autonomous. We have to maintain control and keep visibility and understanding of all critical processes, we should not blindly hand over everything to AI agents just because we can. AI as a tool in the human hand is the only form of AI that is worth pursuing.

This movie is well-made, brisk, a lot of fun, and also has a strain of familial sincerity in common with most of this summer’s blockbusters like THE ODYSSEY, SPIDER-MAN: BND, and TOY STORY 5. A welcome shift away from “Well, THAT just happened” irono-storytelling. See it.

in the black after only 12 days in theaters
Christopher Nolan’s #TheOdyssey has surpassed $700M at the global box office, becoming the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year after just 12 days in theaters.
These ticket sales are all the more impressive considering that “The Odyssey” has yet to open in China, the world’s second-biggest moviegoing market.

Sean Fennessey’s take on Emily Wilson’s review of Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY feels right to me
-very entertaining
-some valid criticisms
-some flat out bad reads of the movie
-an odd but clear tone of ax-grinding, possibly brought on by Wilson feeling snubbed by Nolan about the premier

Wilson’s Brooklyn tattoo aesthetic made a lot of Americans forget the she is a Baliol College upper crust classical snob
Personally I love that both her and Nolan’s Odyssey exist
#TheOdyssey translator Emily Wilson slams Christopher Nolan's movie over "abysmal" writing: “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.”
“Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ lacks many of the elements that make the poem great. It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, war, or bout the relationship between one warrior’s glorious return and the lives of his family, adversaries, comrades, friends and neighbors. It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.” (via London Review of Books/The Guardian).

Honored to reveal Sony Pictures turning on the lights (continuously) for the first time in over SIX years. They will be on nightly now.

firmly believe the reason the cinerama somehow avoided being demolished and replaced by luxury apartments is because of this guy’s work pushing to save the place for years now. bless him.

I am pleased to share the news that Sony Pictures will be reopening and restoring the historic Cinerama Dome. I was briefed by them on their reopening plans and can’t reveal any details, but I was invited to join the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation so I look forward to working with them to ensure that the restoration honors and preserves the Dome and keeps it exactly as it was in 1963. The Sony people have been extremely generous with me and kind. Getting it to reopen has been a six year odyssey for me. I’ve made many new friends along the way and I am grateful for many people supporting me. I started the petition to save the Cinerama Dome within minutes of finding out it was shutting down and it received over 30 thousand signatures. I was able to reveal the 2023 reopening plans and then break the sad news about it being officially cancelled. Many people told me to give up. Industry figures that I deeply admire told me it would be impossible to convince the family ownership to reoepen it or have it leased to another exhibitor considering their other abandoned cinemas and lack of communication to me. I was called delusional. People made fun of me. Instead, I held protests, spoke with city leaders, provided updates from public records, updated the media, continuously pressed the owners. I had conversations with filmmakers ranging from Wes Anderson to Quentin Tarantino about it. A few months ago I projected the images of the owners faces onto the Dome asking them to reopen and they called the police on me. That was actually a miracle in disguise. I received attention from all around the world and the Cinerama Dome became a topic of conversation again. The general public wasn’t aware that the Dome was abandoned & neglected for 6 years. At the time I had thought nobody would care and it was widely accepted the Dome would be another demolition by neglect. That night was the first form of communication I’ve had with the owners in six years. A few weeks later their property representative responded to a comment about my incident saying “Ownership has taken notice to extreme public interest in reopening” and then I gave ownership a deadline of August 20th to reopen or pick a new operator or massive protests will resume at their HQ. Just a few months later I’m contacted by Sony about the reopening. Now I have Save Your Cinema with over 20K followers on social media and millions of views each day. With the help of my followers we have saved multiple cinemas and are actively working on more reopening soon TBA! I am so grateful for everyone supporting me. Here are just some of the people I’d like to thank! Sean Baker, Edgar Wright, Alma Har'el, Joshua Safran, Alison Martino, Gary Baum, Mark Olsen, Jazz Tangcay, Pat Saperstein, Tait Forman, Christopher Forman , vanfathernighy and every single follower and person who signed my petition and liked my posts. We all made this happen TOGETHER as a community effort. Thank you to EVERYONE! The BEST movie theater on Earth will be reopening 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

Greek audiences are applauding at the end of Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY screenings.
Watching Homer’s epic return to the big screen in the country where it began has clearly made the experience even more special.

THE ODYSSEY controversy is fake and does not matter at all. It’s going to sell tons of tickets and get about 12 Oscar nominations
Sam Peppard retweeted
Btw, the argument that Nolan’s casting for The Odyssey was “DEI Oscar math” is nonsensical because studios can meet the Academy’s diversity standards in a number of ways (outside of casting—so marketing, crew, training, etc) and it ONLY applies to Best Picture.
Oppenheimer, for example, with a mostly white cast STILL met the Academy’s inclusion standards through different criteria.
It’s important to read about these things…

THE CRISIS BEHIND THE HOUSING CRISIS
In today's NYT piece, I wrote about how the housing fight is both about housing *and* retirement. We made the house do two jobs at once, and it's pitting the old against the young.

Very happy to say it again. The Odyssey is an amazing film, and missing out on seeing it because you think it’s woke or whatever is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Your loss.
