Can we all agree that “frontier labs are lying about AI safety to pump their IPOs, capture the regulators, and make more money” is a conspiracy theory at this point?
For it to be true, Sam, Dario, Demis, and Elon all have to be lying, along with a big chunk of their execs, chief scientists, and resigning employees.
It also asks you to believe the labs volunteered for much heavier scrutiny that slows them down in the middle of the biggest ARR growth run in the history of capitalism with no signs of slowing down … because they want to make more money by inventing regulatory hurdles that only they can clear(?).
And OpenAI has now said it would even be willing to delay its own IPO over safety concerns - i.e. put off (maybe risk entirely) the biggest liquidity event ever in Silicon Valley. The conspiracy requires us to believe that they’re doing that to make more money(?)
Elon agrees with Dario; i.e. the guy who ran D.O.G.E is *asking for more scrutiny and regulation*. And we're supposed to believe that's because he thinks it will help his company succeed(?)
A much simpler explanation at this point: they think the risk is real.
Alexandr Wang single-handedly raising x risk by 30% by allowing Zuckerberg to get near the frontier of AI development
The biggest problem with technocrats is that they confuse questions of values (does more safety justify building a surveillance state) with objective questions where you can optimize for a number.
Is there anyone in the world who does more to refute stupid narratives on such a wide range of issues than Bari Weiss?

the current time has its own version of lead paint and it's addictive short-form social media
Lots of debates on this site the last few days about what AI can and can't do and whether it is or isn't conscious.
While these are extremely important debates, today I want to focus on what is much easier to find agreement on: what AI should or shouldn't do to kids and youth. We missed the moment to be clear on this with Social Media. Let's not miss the moment with Social AI.
@Noesis_Collab in partnership with @dioscuri & @LeverhulmeCFI worked with a group of leading researchers, AI policy experts, and youth leaders on the question: how might we design AI policy for child and youth flourishing?

Meta continuing to stand out for their lack of principles. They’re happy to admit that they’ve lied for years about KOSA being untenable for their business the second they see a chance to make more money by keeping their AI sexbots unregulated

We are entering a new era where the binding constraint on philanthropic startups is no longer funding.
The scarce factors are good ideas & the talent who can execute on them.
Now is the time for entrepreneurial people to start new organizations that create public goods.
New blog post: The third wave of American philanthropy
Hundreds of billions of dollars in new philanthropic capital will soon become liquid. The OpenAI Foundation holds 26% of OpenAI, worth about $220B at today’s valuation. Anthropic’s seven co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their wealth and have instituted the most aggressive donor matching program for employees in tech history.
How much does this all add up to? And how meaningful is that in the context of philanthropy today?
I was doing some simple napkin math to wrap my head around the scale of what’s coming, and radicalized myself in the process. I had dramatically underappreciated the scale of the philanthropic capital that’s about to become available and the corresponding gap in talent and organizations that will be needed to make the most of it.
This piece aims to directionally sketch the scale of what’s coming, the gap in operational capacity needed to absorb it, and what we can do to fill it.

Researchers sent the same resume to an AI hiring tool twice. Same qualifications. Same experience. Same skills. One version was written by a real human. The other was rewritten by ChatGPT.
The AI picked the ChatGPT version 97.6% of the time.
A team from the University of Maryland, the National University of Singapore, and Ohio State just published the receipt. They took 2,245 real human-written resumes pulled from a professional resume site from before ChatGPT existed, so the human writing was actually human. Then they had seven of the most-used AI models in the world rewrite each one. GPT-4o. GPT-4o-mini. GPT-4-turbo. LLaMA 3.3-70B. Qwen 2.5-72B. DeepSeek-V3. Mistral-7B.
Then they asked each AI to pick the better resume. Every model picked itself.
GPT-4o hit 97.6%. LLaMA-3.3-70B hit 96.3%. Qwen-2.5-72B hit 95.9%. DeepSeek-V3 hit 95.5%. The real human almost never won.
Then the researchers tried the obvious objection. Maybe the AI is just better at writing. So they had real humans grade the resumes for actual quality and ran the experiment again, controlling for it. The result was worse. Each AI kept picking itself even when human judges rated the human-written version as clearer, more coherent, and more effective.
It gets worse. The AIs do not just prefer AI over humans. They prefer themselves over other AIs. DeepSeek-V3 picked its own resumes 69% more often than LLaMA's. GPT-4o picked its own 45% more often than LLaMA's. Each model can recognize and reward its own dialect.
Then the researchers ran the simulation that ends careers. Same job. 24 occupations. Same qualifications. The only variable was whether the candidate used the same AI as the screening tool. Candidates using that AI were 23% to 60% more likely to be shortlisted. Worst gap was in sales, accounting, and finance.
99% of large companies now run AI on incoming resumes. Most of them use GPT-4o. The paper just proved GPT-4o picks GPT-4o 97.6% of the time.
If you wrote your own cover letter this week, you did not lose to a better candidate. You lost to a worse candidate who paid OpenAI 20 dollars.
Your qualifications do not matter if the AI prefers its own handwriting over yours.

We wanted to understand how the rising price of gas will affect blue-collar Americans in Midwestern swing states. So we talked to three Ivy-educated podcasters with trust funds at a Le Pain Quotidien in Dupont Circle.
Great group of folks filling an important gap in AI policy space
