Gutted that @onlinehyphen's parent company is to consult on laying off our entire newsroom. It's been a privilege to work with the talented team on high-impact stories. Editors, if you're hiring, myself and 17 other first-rate journos will likely soon be entering the job market.

🔴 Sad to say that Hyphen’s parent company is consulting on shutting the website and laying off all of its staff, including me.
It’s obviously devastating news for a superb team whose journalism has had real impact this week alone. I’m so proud to have worked alongside them. 🧵

This may seem a good idea for the sanitised Premier League but as a football fan, I can't see this being a positive change at all if it happens.

🔴 We fought the Home Office for nine months to see the outcome of an internal investigation into the death of Mehrab Omrani, who lay dead in asylum housing for up to four months, still wearing an ankle tag.
They initially said we couldn't have it as it contained personal data.

ALT Email exchanges between us and the Home Office showing us requesting the outcome of the investigation, them saying it was exempt under 'health and safety', 'personal data' and 'information provided in confidence', then eventually 9 months later: 'The Home Office has not conducted a separate internal investigation.'

NEW from @anitamureithii: Raza Mustafa Aslam put his life at risk during the Huntingdon train stabbings last year to protect others.
He's been left partially paralysed, unable to work and is still waiting desperately for long-promised mental health support.

🚨 NEW: As UK police embrace the AI revolution, our investigation with @WIRED reveals the messy inside story of one region’s experiment with predictive analytics 🧵 wired.com/story/british-poli…
For more than a decade, police in Bristol, England, have developed at least 23 separate predictive models to score people’s likelihood of becoming perpetrators or victims of crime. Most of the population knows nothing about it. wired.com/story/british-poli…

🚨 NEW: A wildfire has broken out in Glossop, Derbyshire amid the extreme UK heatwave
Sam Gelder retweeted
Sending reporters to do heatwave stories to camera at the beach is a such a lazy bit of consent manufacturing. 35C does not equal the beach. Do the report on a building site where people are on the verge of passing out. Do it from a hospital ward.
