At a Q&A in Melbourne, James Ellroy said Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce would play the leads in a planned adaptation of L.A. Confidential. The room roared with laughter; both were still best known as local soap and indie actors, so it sounded like a joke.
Worse: Pearce was in the audience.
Nobody laughed after the film came out.
