Japanese is much more complicated than English. They use kanji which can have several meanings for each symbol. One piece makes heavy use of this, and so much of what is meant as ambiguous nuance is lost in translation. Hence, if the Japanese are ALL saying "this is a correct reading," then the actual nuance is not being missed. For English speakers, we really like "reading between the lines." However, when there is ambiguous meaning in words in the One Piece manga, the literal font of the words changes to a different "register." You can literally see the potential ambiguousness on the page, and you then must make the connection. It is very much akin to stepping into a "fifth dimension" of language, that simply does not exist in English. Hence, for English speakers, the best reading of One Piece is character. Attempting to "reason out" the implications and authorial intent without kanji is a guessing game. But if you look at the characters and observe how they are, you can make reasonable assumptions about said characters. And once you do, certain themes become highly noticeable, such as the recurring theme of Rugged Individualism (the actual philosophical term) alongside group belonging, with individual freedom trumping all else.
