⚖️ Decades of service. But will CAPF officers get a fair chance to reach the top? The Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Act, 2026, came into force nationwide on October 8. It introduces a common legal framework for recruitment, promotion and deputation across five forces: CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. But the biggest debate is about who gets to lead these forces. 👇 📌 What does the new law provide? 🔹 50% of Inspector General posts are to be filled through IPS deputation. 🔹 At least 67% of Additional Director General posts are to be filled through deputation. 🔹 Appointments at the Special Director General and Director General levels are exclusively through deputation. For CAPF cadre officers who spend their careers serving within these forces, these provisions raise concerns about promotions and opportunities to reach senior leadership positions. ⚖️ The legal battle continues. In May 2025, the Supreme Court directed the Centre to progressively reduce IPS deputation to posts up to IG level over two years and ordered a cadre review. The Court dismissed the Centre’s review petition in October 2025. CAPF officers have challenged the new law, arguing that it could affect their career progression. Retired officers have also approached the Supreme Court over alleged non-compliance with earlier directions.
