Over the past 5 weeks, the team completely rewrote ChatGPT Web on top of the desktop app codebase. This was only possible with Astra, and it’s why Dots, Space, Codex Cloud, and so many more of our launches will come to web and desktop same day. Era of the megaproject begins.

We have been focusing on efficiency and intelligence for all. Very proud of the team. Only possible when you have incredible models at the top end of the capability that you can then use to make a big difference in everything else.

Yes, this result cost millions of dollars. But remember that when @OpenAI announced o3 it cost ~$500,000 to score 87.5% on ARC-AGI 1. Today, Astra scores higher for ~$20. In 2025 it took us and GDM an enormous amount of compute to achieve IMO gold. For the 2026 IMO, anyone with a $20/month ChatGPT subscription could do it. Massively scaling test-time compute gives us a glimpse of the future. I believe that a year from now everyone will have an AI at their fingertips capable of solving problems of this caliber.

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics. The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra. The problem concerns whether the description of smooth three-dimensional fluid motion modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations can break down. It has remained unresolved for roughly 90 years.

Congratulations Levent, Tristan, and OpenAI! What a miraculous time to be alive! I view this as the first successful achievement of Recursive Self Improvement or RSI. Models get increasingly better at Math and get increasingly used by mathematicians to solve all kinds of difficult problems in their domain, thereby contributing very rare and very hard tokens that are then used in the model training to further improve the model's math capabilities: generalizing and drawing connections across sessions and everything else the models learn from; which is then served back, and so on and so forth. This happened first for math but will eventually happen for every domain.

We congratulate Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster on their remarkable mathematical work. We (the researchers and the agents) did not see any of their work through any means until they released it publicly — in particular, no specific user data was accessed in order to solve this problem. While unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models. However, our proofs differ significantly and even the precise results proved are different in the Euler case (forced vs. unforced).

My team worked very hard on the setup, infra, and the runs that resulted in this breakthrough. Many sleepless nights for many people in my team, and across OpenAI. It was a honor and pleasure. It's incredible and humbling to witness how far Artificial Intelligence has come. Dario's phrase "country of geniuses" in a datacenter has never felt more apt. It's also important to recognize & honor the long line of human mathematicians whose work built the foundation of this result. In particular, huge kudos to Levent and Tristan! Overall, I wish the announcement of the results had gone without all the drama. There was no bad intention on anyone's side as far as I know. The drama distracts from the mathematics discovered & the actual science.

We've never seen this before. The biggest jump in Vending-Bench history. GPT-6 Astra is better at making money and more ethical than Claude Fable 5.1. Surprising, because: 1. First time ever that OpenAI is #1 on Vending-Bench 2. The best model is no longer the unethical one.

This model represents a step-function improvement on many benchmarks, and its training is ongoing. Our internal model group arrived at the Navier–Stokes solution in 88 hours, using around 10,000 coordinating AI agents. Throughout the effort, we maintained the strict safeguards—including monitoring and isolation—that we apply to all our frontier evaluations.

Today we're releasing data on models accelerating research at OpenAI. Recursive self-improvement could be the most important contributor to AI capabilities over the next few years, but by default it will only be seen inside a few frontier AI labs. Being transparent is more urgent than ever, so we can inform the public discussion on whether and how to pace model development. I ask other AI companies to do the same. openai.com/index/research-ac…

Astra was probably our biggest competitive advantage while it wasn’t generally available. Since we’ve had it our productivity jumped so much that we shifted some of our plans 6 months ahead and will ship them at DevDay instead of mid next year.

cool new responses api features releasing today with astra: 1. async function calling — model can keep going while your tool runs 2. mid-turn steering — you can inject messages into the model while it's reasoning to steer it in a different direction (incl. tool outputs for the async function calls) 3. change reasoning effort without breaking cache developers.openai.com/api/do…

I want to prevent a race into unmonitorability kicked off by confused reporting. The depth of the computation graph for our present frontier models, including Astra, is within a factor of two of GPT-4. OpenAI has worked to preserve and utilize chain-of-thought monitoring since our very first reasoning models. We deeply care about this technique, as it can give us a view into how model alignment generalizes from its training distribution. I do think it is fragile and unfortunately trending in a negative direction, for reasons not contingent on architecture changes that I will write about soon. But there are things we can do to strengthen it, and it's a core goal of our current research program.

As we prepare to release Astra, we’re focused on making increasingly capable AI safe and broadly accessible. Astra represents a significant advance in cybersecurity capability, reaching the Critical threshold under our Preparedness Framework. We're previewing how we evaluated the model, how its safeguards have advanced alongside its capabilities, and what we'll continue to learn and improve. openai.com/index/path-to-ast…

The OpenAI Foundation is launching AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy to help nonprofits, community organizations, and other trusted partners put advanced AI to work on urgent challenges, develop practical solutions and scale what works. The first effort is a $100 million commitment with Common Health Coalition to launch Breakthroughs to Follow-through to help care teams use AI to reach more patients with proven treatments - starting with the goal of doubling hepatitis C cure rates in Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts. Breakthroughs to Follow-through will work to identify patients who have fallen out of care, synthesize records, track progress, and focus limited staff time where it can have the greatest impact. The OpenAI Foundation wants to empower those who are closest to issues and to put AI to work where it can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. openaifoundation.org/news/ci…
