Something that got missed in the noise last week: Coinbase got approved to offer true global crypto perps in the US. This took many years of work, and we're the first to offer this global liquidity to US users.
Backstory: For many years crypto trading has been moving offshore because the US didn't have clear rules, and perpetual futures were a superior product that traders wanted but it wasn't allowed in the US.
If we're being honest, probably ~half of all perpetual futures volume was Americans using offshore products via VPN with loose KYC controls (an open secret in the industry). Penalties for this were rarely, if ever, enforced, which as you can imagine, was frustrating for us as an American company following the rules. Others set up offshore entities and found ways around it.
After dozens of personal visits to DC, and many more from our policy team, I'm really proud we finally got approval to give US users access to true, global perpetual futures. This is important because we'll now see pooled global liquidity in perpetual futures, with the US and international markets being connected instead of fragmented.
Coinbase is strongest in the US, and the US is the largest market for trading, so there is now a chance to build a global network effect around liquidity. And US traders can now use these products in a compliant way with a US company, which hopefully provides greater customer protection.
Major credit to Chair Selig and Atkins on recognizing the importance of this for US capital markets. And we will keep working to update the system in a compliant way, and to be the best place you can trade.

Alright! Let’s break down Stacks as a Layer 2 blockchain in comparison to Layer 1 blockchains in simple terms.
Layer 1 Blockchains (The Foundation)
Layer 1 blockchains like Bitcoin or Ethereum are the core networks. Think of these as the main highways — they’re secure, trusted, and form the base layer. Everything that happens on these networks is directly written onto their blockchain, ensuring strong security and reliability. However, because they’re so widely used, they can get slow and expensive when too many people try to use them at once.
Layer 2 (The Helper Road) — Specifically Stacks
Stacks is a bit different from other Layer 2 solutions. Instead of just building on Ethereum, like many Layer 2 solutions, Stacks builds on Bitcoin. Think of Stacks as a side road that uses the security of the Bitcoin network (the main highway) but has its own features and capabilities that make things faster, more flexible, and even bring extra abilities like smart contracts.
Here’s how it works with a car analogy:
1.Bitcoin as Layer 1 (Main Highway):
Bitcoin is slow but super secure. Every transaction on this highway is checked carefully, which makes it very reliable but also congested and slow when lots of people are on it.
2.Stacks as Layer 2 (Specialized Side Road):
Stacks operates on a side road connected to Bitcoin. Here, cars (transactions) can move faster and get access to new features like smart contracts (think of these as adding fancy features to your car, like autopilot).
But here’s the unique part: every so often, Stacks sends its transactions back to Bitcoin, which checks them for security, so they’re still protected by Bitcoin’s reliability. It’s like every car on the Stacks road gets a “security check” from Bitcoin before finishing the journey.
Why Use Stacks?
•Smart Contracts on Bitcoin: Bitcoin doesn’t have built-in smart contracts, but Stacks enables them, allowing developers to build apps and services that benefit from Bitcoin’s security while adding more functionality.
•Faster and Cheaper: Since transactions aren’t directly on Bitcoin, they’re faster and less costly than Layer 1 Bitcoin transactions.
•Secure by Bitcoin: Even though Stacks is its own network, it uses Bitcoin’s security for extra protection, making it unique among Layer 2 solutions.
In summary:
•Bitcoin (Layer 1) is the super-secure, original road (blockchain) but is slower and limited in capabilities.
•Stacks (Layer 2 on Bitcoin) is like a helper road that adds more features (like smart contracts) and speeds up transactions, all while staying connected to Bitcoin for its security.

Replying to @TeslaBoomerMama
“We lose total control” implies that they have almost total control already, which seems true based on how the legacy media all mysteriously have the exact same talking points at the exact same time.
The media all said Biden was “sharp as a tack” right before the debate where it became obvious to the public that he has serious dementia.
Then they tossed out Biden against his will, like an old newspaper, and installed Kamala as the candidate, even though no one in the Democratic primary voted for her. Super shady and undemocratic!
Interesting session!!
