A defense pact with Europe would lead to one thing:

Europe won't be coming to help us if we're ever in need.
Would they defend us against China?

Right now in NSW solar power has gone to sleep, and wind power is delivering just 0.7% of the State‘s electricity needs.
What will keep the lights on when we close down our coal fired power on nights like tonight ?
And if you think "batteries", please explain how you are going to re-charge them (after they were drained to get us through the night before) on a day like today when it’s been so overcast and without wind ?
This is why you need battery storage - not just for a few hours - and not just for one 16 hour period - but for multiple days. And that would bankrupt the country.
