It is unfitting for the President of the Republic to be announcing the placement of Zikr boards across the country. That is the purview of local councils. More unfortunate still is the President’s continued refusal to work with councils, choosing instead to bypass and undercut them while centralising functions that properly belong at the local level. It is the same formula as the million-tree campaigns: grand announcements, millions spent, grand media hype, little maintenance and even less accountability. Six months later, there is often little left to show for it. Another gimmick. Another bill for the taxpayer. Another attempt to score “dheenee” points. @MMuizzu

Well, @muththo Malé’s reef wasn’t as lucky as the bridge. Shame that despite knowing that the anchor had snapped, authorities were unable to intervene and simply watched on as the vessels scraped along Malé’s northeastern reef before crashing into the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge. Hoping to see @MaleCitymv and mayor @adamazim take quick action to survey and quantify the damage, together with NGOs, marine experts and other relevant stakeholders. I have little confidence that the toothless @ERA_Maldives will act with the urgency this requires. Who takes responsibility for the damage caused to Malé’s already degraded reef??! @MMuizzu @MekhaelMohamed @MNDF_Official @aminathfero @ShahuuRiza @SaveMaldivesMV @SavetheBeachVM

@MaleCitymv seems to complain about the kanmathi parking problem forever without actually solving it. Are we waiting for an already overstretched @PoliceMv force to do it? They clearly cannot. Has the council built the capacity to tow illegally parked or abandoned vehicles? Has the council sought to assume any such enforcement powers? Nope. We all know something needs to be done; the problem is actually doing it. Governing means actually fixing it. @Haleem6th @adamazim

Another @MMuizzu vanity projects to dish out a contract to a party cadre without a competitive bidding process! Was @MaleCitymv consulted? Were the people of Hulhumalé, especially residents around Ruhgandu, consulted before deciding to build over more than 10,000 square feet of this open space? And on what basis does @hdcmaldives get to decide, without public consultation, how Hulhumalé’s already scarce public spaces should be used? @adamazim

Before 2010, industrial fleets fished Chagos waters. One purse-seine year took roughly 24,000 tonnes. Maldives' entire yellowfin catch last year was just under 32,000. Britain says the handover is a bilateral matter. @aekofathih on why the fisheries are not. maldivesindependent.com/by-s…

November 2023: 33,000 SOE employees. By October 2025: 39,000. +6,000 By April 2026: 42,000. +3,000 In 2.5 years, government drew nearly 10,000 people into SOEs, away from traditional, sustainable livelihoods, with the promise of regular salaries, for almost no work. Then came the April 4, 2026 defeat in both the referendum and council elections. With a sudden fit of anger came an epiphany to @MMuizzu: SOEs need to be “right-sized”; 13,000 SOE jobs will be slashed!! What a cruel, sick joke! I don’t know why @presidencymv @MMuizzu is attempting to amend the Decentralisation Act when the Urban Development Act already allows the government to take land and buildings away from councils virtually at will, whenever it suits its convenience. Either he is unaware of the powers his own government already has, or his cronies have no clue what they are doing. What a shame. @AhmedXamyr @muththo @a_usham xitter.cf/aekofathih/status/2075…

Then do something about it instead of complaining and making empty noise. Article 69-2(a) of the Decentralisation Act requires councils to establish service provision agreements when municipal services are assigned to another party. Those agreements define responsibilities, service standards, accountability and council oversight. So why keep shouting at @WAMCOmv instead of doing what the law requires? Mayor @adamazim, where are the service provision agreements that should govern the provision of municipal services in Malé? @MaleCitymv

The last time we saw @ibusolih on TV, he said he had no reason to apologise for pardoning Adeeb; shameless, entitled and utterly tone-deaf. Now he announces a bid for the @MDPSecretariat presidential ticket. The worst thing that could happen to MDP in 2028 is to return to a man who, when given the opportunity to govern, refused to deliver meaningful structural reform and reneged on promises of justice.

@PoliceMv, what an irresponsible and shameless thing to say: “drivers were not initially reprimanded because no accident occurred.” @PoliceMvCP So someone has to be killed before the state takes action? @ameen3d Have enough lives not already been lost and people maimed by reckless driving on this bridge? Anyone who endangers public safety for fun and games has no business holding a driver’s licence. Revoke it. Nothing has changed since I last spoke about this at @MaleCitymv in May 2025! xitter.cf/aekofathih/status/1922…

If SOEs genuinely required an additional 2,000 employees between the third quarter of 2025 and the first of 2026, what changed within a matter of months? If those appointments were genuinely necessary to meet operational needs only months ago, what credible evidence is there that those operational requirements disappeared almost overnight?
In April the government said state-owned enterprises employed 42,000 people. Four months earlier it was under 40,000. In July it ordered those same companies to cut a third of their workforce by 13 October. That is at least 13,860 jobs. A circular is not a legal basis for dismissing anyone. Before deploying more magufaaraverin, the @MaleCitymv must first approve and gazette the Aanmu Undhagulaa Behey Gavaidhu, giving them the legal authority they need to enforce the rules. Without this regulation, their role will remain largely ineffective. As things stand, it is unclear what powers magufaaraverin have, the scope of their duties, what conduct they can act against, or what constitutes an offence. Case in point: where were they when a humongous tree was chopped down to a stump in Villimalé? The regulation has been drafted and has sat awaiting council approval for far too long. @adamazim

What a shame. @TransparencyMV dedicated to good governance and workers’ rights should be held to a higher moral standard. Yet it’s doubling down on the violations, and continuing to refuse to pay what is owed. Even more troubling is that the very person who, as Executive Director, engineered this situation now chairs the board and is participating in the decision to prolong it. Stop making excuses. Stop jeopardising the very cause you claim to champion. Stop destroying the credibility of one of the country’s few active NGOs. Resign Shiuna! @anticorruption
"Congratulations on your new job!" The email arrived on July 18, 2019. Ali Shareef had not resigned. Seven years, a tribunal ruling and a High Court judgment later, Transparency Maldives still hasn't paid what the courts say it owes him. maldivesindependent.com/soci…
