a lot of people love to operate under the assumption that the art of the moving image was created to “advance the plot.”

Ok so I work in a cinema and i'm not kidding or making this up, but this image juste showed up on the app we use to put posters for the movies we show. Idk if it’s putting them by itself but wtf

Just an extraordinarily smart guy. "There's 4 versions of me. There's the me that we both know. There's the me that you know but I don't know. There's the me I know but you don't know. And then there's the me that neither of us knows and that's ideally where the art comes from"

Dennis Lim on Hong Sangsoo and his films in this year's NYFF: "I am so convinced that it is one film. It is one project, and every film just adds to this massive, ongoing film in progress. I actually think the two from this year are among two of my favorite recent Hongs. Fireflies is doing a second edition of the book I wrote on Hong Sangsoo’s cinema ['Tale of Cinema']. They asked if I wanted to write a little extra, an introduction, and I decided, in the end, to write an afterword because it made more sense. When I had written that book—which was part of a series of monographs about specific films—I had set myself this private challenge that I would write about every Hong film that he had made up until that point, just to prove the point that you cannot consider any single Hong film in isolation. They all relate to one another. I think the two we’re showing are among my favorites." Read our interview with the festival's artistic director: thefilmstage.com/dennis-lim-…
