When a local dialysis provider gets bought by one of the two big national providers, they charge more to Medicare and more patients die.

“We’re not using our healthcare dollars in the United States efficiently,” @ryanmcdevitt told @GoHealio. “Every dollar … could ... be spent implementing quality improvement programs or directly subsidizing access,” @rileyleague said. Learn why 👇 vist.ly/5gzkx

Sad to hear that this interesting and influential result was most likely made up. How many PhD students have lost years, and perhaps career prospects, working on projects inspired by fraudulent research? Scientific fraud is not just about undue benefits. There are real victims.

I tried to be chill, but Acemoglu’s false statement reminded me too much of the gaslighting I had to deal with to publish my comment Acemoglu et al don’t respond directly to criticisms, and often make up demonstrably false claims to defend themselves, with no accountability

Models are better than humans at identifying certain kinds of errors. Not using the best models for this purpose is research malpractice. Akin to an actuary who refuses to use a computer or calculator to help with arithmetic.
I haven't found an official release from the AEA but I think this is a terrible idea. Let editors and referees make decisions (with whatever tools they want, A.I. included) but the publication process does not need this additional step.

Some back-of-the-envelope math suggests that our org commits >10 faculty FTE to clicking boxes. This doesn’t count any employees other than faculty MDs (of which there are many thousands) and costs $2.5M in salary and $4.5M in foregone clinical revenue. How does this make sense?

A takeaway from the National Bureau of Economic Research meetings: The premium on research that is mainly about computational complexity has dropped sharply owing to AI. The pendulum is swinging back to 'new insights,' 'new mechanisms,' 'new measurements.' Not a bad thing.

A small pet peeve It's really silly when non-academics interpret being chair of an academic department as a mark of seniority That's not the way academia works! Chairs are critical administrators but it's more like being the chair of a co-op board than Director at Meta

Good point. Universities have stopped hiring faculty even as they expand administration. Competition will force them to do the opposite. In the age of AI, we need fewer administrators, many more faculty.

Strongly recommend this piece by Jessie Shapiro on HBR about the mentoring program he has been running at HBS since his arrival. It has been transformational for our junior faculty, and it's helpful for others too. hbsp.harvard.edu/inspiring-m…
