In every World Cup host city, on the nights of nearly every match and even for the high-stakes games in the coming weeks ... hotel prices are dropping (sometimes by a lot!)

The Group Stage is officially over, and we're into the World Cup Knockouts. From here it's simple: just beat the team in front of you. Five times.
Our World Cup Tracker at The Athletic is still the best place to follow the tournament in real time.

🇮🇷 Iran also has realistic paths to finish first to fourth in Group G. Currently in third with a 92% chance to advance, they'd jump to first in the group with a goal, or to third-place and eliminated with an Egypt goal.

In the new 48-team World Cup format, the top eight of 12 third-place teams qualify for the knockout rounds.
That means there are 495 possible combinations of third-place teams that advance.
Only 126 potential combinations remain as we near the end of the group stage — @EmilyGiam and @RyanaBest explain it all ⬇️

🏴 Scotland is down, but not out. Here's **one** potential path for them to still make the Round of 32:
🇪🇸 Spain 2 - 🇺🇾 Uruguay 1
🇪🇬 Egypt 2 - 🇮🇷 Iran 1
🇬🇭 Ghana 1 - 🇭🇷 Croatia 0
🇨🇩 D.R. Congo 0 - 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan 0
🇦🇹 Austria 2 - 🇩🇿 Algeria 0

It’s no wonder Anthony Elanga ended up like this.
The permutations at this World Cup are complicated!
Stay up to date with The Athletic’s Forecast, where you'll find detailed estimates for how likely all 48 teams are to make the Round of 32.

Sweden are, put bluntly, really confusing. Especially to Anthony Elanga.
He slumped to the ground at full-time and beat the ground in frustration. He didn’t realise 1-1 was enough for them qualify, despite what Graham Potter had said earlier.

🇸🇳 Senegal needs to run up the score against 🇮🇶 Iraq if they want to make the knockouts. Their odds of making the Round of 32, by final score:
🇸🇳 1 - 🇮🇶 0: 47%
🇸🇳 2 - 🇮🇶 0: 87%
🇸🇳 3 - 🇮🇶 0: 96%
The more goals the merrier for The Lions of Teranga today.
Even if they don't win big, Senegal needs to win — a draw or loss would eliminate them. Follow Senegal's chances (updating live during every minute of the match) on The Athletic.

For teams in third sitting on three points, the two most important (realistic) outcomes to root for today are:
🇪🇸 Spain over 🇺🇾 Uruguay
🇪🇬 Egypt over 🇮🇷 Iran
With those results, odds of getting thru:
🇰🇷 South Korea: 68% ➡️ 94%
🏴 Scotland: 12% ➡️ 31%
🇮🇶 Iraq beating or drawing with 🇸🇳 Senegal would be _even better_ for 🇰🇷 South Korea and 🏴 Scotland.
But Senegal is a great team that needs a big win to give themselves a chance, so I wouldn't hold out hope for that result.
