My favorite genre of AI expert is the guy who confidently explains why AI will never be able to do something, watches it do exactly that six months later, and then explains why it doesn’t actually count. Must be exhausting being wrong professionally.

Don't Cry - BUILD! 🦾 Leading China’s mathematicians joined forces in Beijing on Sunday to launch an alliance aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into mathematical research. It will bring together eight leading institutions and aims to create a network of more than 1,000 scientists. The alliance will focus on developing specialised AI models for mathematics, using the technology to generate conjectures and formalise proofs, and building systems whose reasoning could be more easily interpreted. scmp.com/news/china/science/…

There are several issues. One is the inability to properly communicate of several mathematicians, this is more apparent during a crisis. Second: the mathematical establishment is guilty of giving excessive importance to the problem solving part of the profession over others.
Apart from general awkwardness, mathematicians are at a disadvantage in discourse because the general public (including much of the twitterati) has very little sense of what we do. I like the activity of solving problems/proving theorems but math research is not a problem set.

I try to talk to normies about the openAI 700 math slop drop and they just say openAI stole the solutions from mathematician's chat logs and that the agents didn't solve it themselves. Do you realize how much damage you have done Tristan Buckmaster?

Fields medallist Hugo Duminil-Copin was deeply shaken by OpenAI’s release of more than 700 AI-generated mathematical manuscripts, including work on 16 questions directly relevant to his research. “On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke up my daughter” “They have annihilated my field of research.” lemonde.fr/sciences/article/…

“On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke my daughter. [OpenAI] annihilated my field of research. They wanted to prove they could massacre us.” these are the words of Fields Medalist, Hugo Duminil-Copin, who was working on 16 problems OpenAI now claims it has solved. and he says some mathematicians may now keep their research problems to themselves rather than share them publicly. AI might actually make mathematics less open.

The big threat to the math/TCS community isn't the AI advances. It is the community's reactions to those advances that make us taken less & less seriously. It can lead to losing the next generation of top mathematicians (training=our main job). THAT would be our existential risk.

Exactly
> Any one of them could work as a quant or “AI Scientist” … No, no they could not.

I remember being obsessed with human intelligence in my teens it suddenly occurred to me (with some sadness and maybe even a tinge of horror) that I'm finding machine intelligence a lot more interesting
What do you consider open questions in understanding generalization? What feels unexplained or mysterious?

Naah, they would still find a reason to whine, it’s not about quality of exposition or code
Had the papers been beautifully written and the Lean code error-free, professional mathematicians would have faced a despair so much deeper than what they are going through now.

You don’t understand. When 10M factory workers lose their jobs, that’s a statistic. When a problem a mathematician’s been working on gets solved, that’s a tragedy.
