Well, yes, but loads of philosophers don't take Butler seriously, and don't consider them to be a philosophers at all. And I think they're right.

Thanks, I hope this is widely read. (I had a couple of moments doubt about 'Spawned in philosophy and gender studies departments...' because it's also resisted by a few in philosophy departments, but, on reflection, fair enough)

I wrote a new piece about women’s rights and whether or not I want trans people dead. (Spoiler: I don’t)👇

This post was in reaction to the article below, which was posted by one of the authors on @LinkedIn. So you can check the reference.
In response to a polite but dissenting comment, that author (Dr Pape) has now blocked me there.

I’ll be moderating a panel with Kara, @bindelj and @KhadijaKhan__ on Thursday evening in central London to look at the long history of excusing violence against Jewish women within feminism. Link to tix in replies.
The feminist view of rape applied to Jewish women in the aftermath of 10/7 comes for the West. It is not a surprise, and it’s not about #MeToo: a strand of feminism has been developing the idea that rape is the collateral damage of racism and imperialism, and that we must accept violent revolution in order to end these oppressions, for years.
Angela Davis, “Violence Against Women and the Ongoing Challenge to Racism,” 1985: “The very same social conditions which spawn racist violence…are the same forces which encourage sexual violence. Thus, sexual violence can never be completely eradicated until we have succeeded in effecting a whole range of radical social transformations in our country.”
Same essay: “If we are militant activists challenging violence against women, we must also see ourselves as fearless fighters against police violence, and in passionate solidarity with the racially and nationally oppressed people who are its main targets.”
Etc.
This vision of feminism always said women’s concerns would be addressed in the aftermath of anti-state revolution, not before. In fact, the liberal version of feminism associated with Jewish feminist Betty Friedan was developed in part to counter this very idea.

Sure, mate. There's just one thing ...

Exactly. The RNTK comes with ineligibility. This seems to me a good example where people wrongly think that rights are free-standing, and have no entailments:
'Yes, you have this right. You can exercise it. Exercising it comes with some entailments.' ...
Perhaps I should make the implication clear, though it's fairly obvious. If you don't wish to know whether you are female or not, that's fine, refuse the test.
But you will be unable to demonstrate eligibility for the female category.
Them's the breaks.
Some of those arguing against SRY screening have latched on to the idea of 'a right not to know'.
Can't see this being a promising line of argument.
If you don't want to take the test, don't take the test.
Hth.

As activists in the Labour and trade union movement we stand firmly with our FWS sisters. We are stalwarts of trade unions - among us are current and former workplace reps, committee members, branch officers, builders of picket lines, you name it. We want unions to support women.
Joy! Now @SeanCMBell, who boasts of bylines in @bellacaledonia & @ScotNational joins in the @NASUWT pile-on.
No we are "wildly hostile" to a failure to support women in the workplace. That's not being hostile to Unions, it's objecting to a failure to fulfil their obligations.
At least deal with what we actually say rather than invent malign intent.

The fight is hard, but it is winnable. Every member who joins it makes the next fight easier to win. And the next member could be you."

NEW: Sandeep Kaushik, a consultant who has been paid $64,750 to work AGAINST the initiatives, admits, "somebody who is born biologically male, now playing on a female sports team...they're going to have a competitive advantage."
He also said the initiative to protect girls' sports is "likely to pass and maybe even overwhelmingly" because polls show it's a "70/30, even maybe an 80/20 issue."
"In this case, there is a fairness issue"
Don't take this for granted. Let's make it happen. VOTE YES ON I-638

BREAKING: WNBA formally tells Congress that only biological women can play in the league, declaring Enes Kanter Freedom & Royce White ineligible because "both are men.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The WNBA's Oct 16 letter states "only women are eligible to play in the WNBA" and the individuals "are both men" without using "biological" or defining "women"; the CBA uses identical wording.

Brazilian volleyball finally stepped up and banned men from the women's Superliga, in other words, Brazil finally has a women's volleyball league.
This means male athlete Rodrigo "Tifanny" Abreu will no longer be able to play at the highest level of "women's" volleyball, but Abreu managed to steal one last award before leaving, as he was named MVP of the 2026 Supercopa after his team won the Supercopa Championship.
Abreu is a man in his 40s, still going strong against pro female atheltes. Although he was banned from the top Superliga competition, that doesn't mean he's necessarily done cheating women out of titles and stealing opportunities away from them. He is still more than welcome to join an amateur "women's" team in Brazil where there are more than 40 other men currently playing.
Abreu's narcissism can be seen on full display on his social media where alongside photos he posts of himself surrounded by his medals (not an ounce of shame or self awareness), he calls himself "courageous" and "resilient."
"I don't want to be remembered just for the points I've scored or the titles I've won. I want to leave a legacy of respect, courage and hope," he says.
No Rodrigo, your legacy is one of cowardice, selfishness, misogyny, and the oppression of women, and you will forever be remembered as the shallow, ugly, cheating man that you are.
I'll make sure of it.
