Very excited to be joining Science to Sport as one of their running coaches!
Science to Sport are the best team of cycling coaches in the world with every accolade you can think of - and now we're building a world class team of running coaches too 👊
Big weekend of PBs - I love coaching towards a marathon! So many months of hard work leading up to these results
One of my favourite workouts for 10/21/42km runners (can be adjusted for different distances):
Over-under fartleks!
Typically I like to start with 10 x (90sec fast, 90sec float) with the fast at +-10sec/km above threshold, and the float around 30sec/km below threshold
There's nothing magical about a single workout or week - the magic is how they're built into the training plan as a whole:
allowing for sufficient recovery, stimulating various energy systems, building confidence in the athlete, progressing fitness.

"There’s absolutely no physiological reason why a 7-day cycle is preferable to any other length of time. If anything, there’s a strong case to argue it’s a bit too short to fit everything in"

Incredible day at the Gun Run Half - 9 PBs for my athletes on the day!
Had a great day out on the route cheering for everyone
With Comrades entries having recently opened, it’s time to start thinking about your long-term planning for this enormous challenge!
One of the most common mistakes I see is runners waiting until the new year before they start thinking about Comrades.
This inevitably leads to injuries or sub-optimal training. It’s so important to continue training consistently throughout the rest of this year, so that when 2027 comes around, you’re fit enough to start your Comrades build.
A study on cramping in ultra trail runners:
Hydration is important, but strength training is also essential!
Your watch's " VO2max" reading does not represent your VO2max!
My biggest gripe is having to constantly reassure runners that they have not lost fitness due to their watch reading decreasing 🙈
What's more impressive - Kerr's Mile WR or Sawe's sub 2hrs?
Personally I think Kerr - as it's been such a long-standing record that hasn't really been challenged. The marathon record has been broken many times recently and was even broken by 2 men in one race

- strides
- uphill strides
- 10sec hill sprints
I'd typically start with strides, then progress into hill strides and then finally add in hill sprints for high-level athletes

Dehydration makes carbs less effective.
Cyclists who performed a time trial without adequate fluid intake (losing ~2.8% of body mass) had a 16% reduction in average carbohydrate oxidation rate vs. cyclists with adequate fluid intake.
