The preliminary Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperature for October 13 just broke 30°C for the third time, and is now 3.3°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.
This marks the 22nd consecutive daily temperature above the previous all-time record high of 29.815°C. set on Nov. 17, 2015.

For the first time in recorded history, the Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperature (SST) is above 30.0°C, reaching a preliminary SST of 30.06°C on October 5th.
The Niño 3.4 SST anomaly is now 3.41°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.
Everything is not fine.

The preliminary sea-surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region just set a record 3.1°C above the 1991-2020 mean, but it's been very volatile. Best to wait for the 2-week window to pass.
Conjecture: hurricanes are upwelling cooler waters in the Pacific, contributing to rapid SST changes.

Following quality control checks, a manually operated weather station has been confirmed to have recorded 38.2°C on Thursday the 13th of August, making it the hottest day of 2026.
This exceeds the previous maximum temperature of 38.1°C recorded at Kew Gardens on the same day.

A layer of almost 6 metres of ice is gone. In the center of the biggest glacier of the Alps. It is hard to grasp even for glaciologists.

A potential record El niño in the Pacific is causing records to be broken elsewhere.
No hurricanes have formed yet in the Atlantic in 2026 due to El niño-induced atmospheric conditions and none are expected to form soon.

El Niño’s ocean-atmosphere coupling is locked in, with a huge and persistent wave of rising air over the Pacific.
This generates a spider web-like response across the atmosphere that tugs at weather patterns worldwide, even in places thousands of miles away 🕸️

You would normally expect a total of around 97% of average at this point in the month, but the UK is currently tracking its third driest July on record with only 35% of average rainfall.

Last June saw much of western Europe experiencing a record-breaking heatwave and marine heatwaves across western Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. Global monthly mean sea-surface temperature, excluding the polar regions, exceeded the June 2024 record.
