Let me share two stories from my own racing journey that highlight both sides of this coin. At one point, this arrangement seemed to save my entire race. At the 2017 Mississauga Marathon, my friend—the one driving me to the race—overslept. We left in a rush, nerves jangling, and then hit another snag: the traffic police pulled us over. Thankfully, after we explained our situation, they let us go with just a warning. When we finally arrived at the parking lot, I could already hear the runners counting down from ten. I dashed from the car, pulling off my tracksuit as I ran toward the sound of the starting gun. With no time for a warm-up or final preparations, I barely made it to the back of the first wave. Miraculously, I finished second that day. If I had carried an extra pair of shoes and planned to change at the last minute, I might have missed that chance entirely. But not every race is so forgiving. At the 2026 Vermont City Marathon, I tried the same approach: racing kit and shoes under my tracksuit. I hoped my walk and light jog from the hotel would warm me up. The weather had other plans. A constant drizzle turned my tracksuit and racing shoes into sponges. By the time I reached the elite tent, I was soaked, and my shoes were squelching with every step. The cold quickly seeped in, and I never truly shook it off. That race was a struggle, and I didn’t finish, a lesson in how small shortcuts can come at a greater cost. buff.ly/yr3yVY8

An incredible coach, Coach Frank Gagliano, has died, at the age of 89. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and athletes. #Gags
USA Track & Field mourns the passing of legendary coach Frank “Gags” Gagliano, who died October 25 at the age of 89. For more than six decades, Gagliano helped shape generations of middle-distance runners, mentoring Olympians, world-class athletes and countless others throughout his remarkable coaching career. From Georgetown to the professional ranks, his impact extended far beyond the track. Earlier this year, USATF recognized his contributions by naming the men’s 800m event at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in his honor. His legacy lives on through the athletes he coached, the lives he touched and the generations he inspired. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the many athletes whose lives he touched.

Charles Hicks, USA, was the second American in Chicago. We in the media had asked for the first 3 Americans, and we were able to see two post-race. Charles was quite transparent in his interview, giving us a better view of an athlete we could see in 2028 and 2032. @ChiMarathon, @CareyRunsChi, @BowermanTC,
Charles Hicks, USA, 8th in 2:05:35. In the interview with media emceed by James O’Brien, Charles spoke eloquently about his third marathon, his battle with Clayton Young and Vinny Mauri, and the lessons that he will take away from Chicago! The Brewers just advanced to the World Series for the first time in 44 years. They beat the Dodgers, who outspend them by $193 million. With a player who said: “I stopped caring about results. I started caring about competing.” And a manager who got fired from his first big-league job and had to admit: “My ego was involved a great deal more than it should have been. Last year, the brewers lost to LA in the playoffs, getting swept in the process. Their coach Pat Murphy’s framing backfired: “I’m sorry I played that underdog card. I probably shouldn’t have played that, used that as an excuse for why we didn’t play well...I don’t care who the underdog is. I don’t care who the favorite is. It’s about getting in the ring and fighting it out.” Our frame has to match the moment. An underdog story can be energizing, but it can also give you an out. That’s the nuance of leading in the arena, everything works and doesn’t. Two years ago, after hitting .199, Jake Bauers was ready to retire. A few days after he made that call, he found out his wife was pregnant. He stuck around partially for the health insurance. Now, he’s the NLCS MVP, after a career year, and three moments that changed the series for the Brewers. His explanation for the turnaround: “I came into this year feeling like there was really only one person holding me back, and that was myself...I stopped caring about results. I started caring about competing.” It sounds absurd. Isn’t the result the point? But when we focus too much on the result, it pulls us away from taking the actions that actually help us get there. An outcome obsession also activates more avoidance motivation. Our brain goes into protecting our ego mode because we’ve told it the results matter so much. We’ve got to let go...just enough, to get out of our own way. The Brewers manager has a similar arc. Pat Murphy got his first big-league managing job at 56, as the Padres’ interim. He lasted 96 games and was let go. His own review: “I did everything wrong five times... My ego was involved a great deal more than it should have been.” He then spent 8 seasons as a bench coach, and only got another opportunity at 65. He’s now been Manager of the Year twice with the 19th-ranked payroll. His simple motto: “You keep trying to find a way.” He benched Christian Yelich, his highest-paid player, for Game 1 of the NLCS. He benched rookie Cooper Pratt for not hustling, in a pennant race. He comes with standards and care, at the same time. It’s not an either/or, demanding or players coach. You need both. “They may have a bunch of Hall of Famers, but we’ve got a bunch of gamers. And the gamers won this week.” The Brewers won with a manager who dropped his ego. A star player who dropped the results story. And a team who ditched the underdog role, and decided to compete instead of trying to force their way to a win.. And they came from behind in all 4 games, to claim victory. That’s what a gamer is. People who tell the right story for the moment in front of them. It’s not some fake alpha BS that looks good on the internet. It’s someone who finds a way to show up and keep competing, despite the discomfort, fear, and everything else that goes into stepping into the arena.

Beth Dobbin has revealed she now spends more than 22 hours a day in bed as she battles myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The 32-year-old, who represented Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, told BBC Sport that she wanted to raise awareness of the condition even though the interview itself could set her back for months. ME is a chronic, fluctuating disease that causes symptoms including sleep problems, pain, difficulties with thinking and memory. Even everyday activities, such as having a conversation or being exposed to bright lights or loud noises, can trigger a “crash”, with symptoms lasting anywhere from 24 hours to several months. There is currently no known cure for ME and no specific treatment. Read more 👉 athleticsweekly.com/news/bet…

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.
