Developing an MMO all by yourself?
Is it just about placing mobs and adding a few valuable items for them to drop?
Or is it about assigning specific classes to each mob, and defining unique values for swords and upgrades?
It’s been nearly a year and a half, and the old-school MMO I’ve been developing solo is nearing completion. Now, however, I need people to help test it.

Hi everyone! This is a my MMORPG!
It’s not a Web3 or token based game. It’s an old school MMO!
I'm continuing development on my solo MMORPG, Atherion, and right now I'm focused on the Knight class.
If you grew up playing Albion, RuneScape, Metin2, or any old school MMORPG, those games are a huge part of what inspired me to build this world.

Hey everyone! ⚔️
Does anyone else miss when MMORPGs felt like real adventures? Albion? World Of Warcraft?
Exploring unknown worlds, making friends, and getting lost in the game for hours...
I'm building Atherion, an old-school MMORPG, completely solo.
A big playtest is coming soon, and I'd love for you to be part of it!
If you still love oldschool MMOs, a like, repost, or joining our community would mean the world to me.
Let's bring back that old MMO feeling together!

Atherion has actually been in development for almost two years now. I only started sharing my progress publicly about 6–7 months ago.
My goal with this MMO has always been simple: to bring people who love oldschool MMORPGs together and build a world where we can all have a good time.
I remember how excited I was when WoW Forever came out. Just seeing that there were still so many people who loved oldschool MMOs genuinely made me happy.
Developing an MMORPG alone is incredibly difficult. Whether you build everything yourself or rely heavily on AI, it’s still a massive challenge. But here’s what matters to me.
I know what I loved about oldschool MMOs, and I know what made those worlds special.
I want to bring some of that feeling back with Atherion.
And I genuinely can’t wait for people to play it.
I’ve never wanted Atherion to be just about killing monsters.
I’ve been wrong about things. I’ve made mistakes along the way. But the people who’ve supported me, shared their feedback, and challenged my decisions have helped me become a better developer.
We have a Discord community where I regularly test the game together with the people who’ve been following its development.
Their feedback has shaped Atherion more than they probably realize.
If you’d like to be part of this journey, you’re more than welcome to join us. You can find our Discord through my profile.
I’m seeing more and more people developing MMOs lately.
But an MMO isn’t just an online world where players run around killing mobs.
Server costs, maintaining a massive economy, keeping everything balanced, and earning players’ trust, especially as a solo developer, are real challenges.
AI can help you build things, sure. But believe me, making an MMO is incredibly difficult.
Two characters, a few maps, and some monsters don’t make an MMORPG.
There’s so much more to it than that.
Every boss and every map in Atherion is connected to the world’s story.
Monsters aren’t just standing around waiting to be killed. Each belongs to a different family, with its own behavior, strengths, and weaknesses.
Some will try to escape. Others are better at defending themselves. Some protect their territory, while others will fight you head on.
Even their stats are designed around their specific monster family.
I don’t want enemies to feel like moving XP bags. I want them to feel like they actually belong in this world.
In Atherion, you don’t just unlock a new map because you’ve reached a certain level.
Every new area is unlocked by completing its story. These places are filled with NPCs waiting to be saved, and the quests and combat are all part of that journey.
PvP follows the same idea, but it’s built around protecting these lands.
Through PvP and clan rankings, you or your clan can become the guardian of a particular region.
But earning that title is one thing. Keeping it means proving you’re stronger than the other players who want it.
I want every map to mean something, not just be another place to grind XP.
This my mmorpg.
And here I am in the cave.
This is one of the Atherion caves, and it consists of multiple levels.
Clearing each level isn't exactly easy, but the items that drop make it highly valuable.
