It’s been a heck of a journey! wsj.com/sports/candice-burt-… – at Boulder, CO
Finished 300mile gravel race! Took a huge leap of faith that I could ride that far since I had only ridden up to 70 miles this year. It went great, was an incredible adventure. Also, I’m back to running now after 3 months of no running post hamstring tear! 🏃♀️ HURT 100 in January
The full loop around Tahoe is back next month finally after 6 years of working to make it happen (Covid & then the Caldor fire!). @Tahoe200ultra just one full circumnavigation on trail
Hot take: if you’re making content the entire race, you’re probably not pushing that hard.
Part of ultrarunning used to be disappearing for a while. No signal. No posting. Just you and the effort. Save the pics for posting afterward.
Cool to get a mention here!

“Halfway to Crazy” documentary is now live and free to watch on YouTube now after playing at film festivals. Follow my journey as I chase the fastest known time on the 800-mile Arizona Trail, pushing my body through 60+ miles a day on relentless repeat (Link in comments)
It’s on @DestinationTrl YouTube channel: youtu.be/_CgCxvZEDJw?si=LRTj… enjoy!
Yesterday’s run: no spikes needed up to South Boulder Peak 8,524ft. I only use spikes with long sections of icy trails. The snow was still soft and sparse in many places. Careful foot placement usually means running from rock to rock vs. stepping on icy spots.
Give me your best examples of training vs exercising: what do newbs need to know to get stronger/faster?
I’ll start:
Training necessitates progression, a steady build over time that accounts for adaptation and stress.
Question: are your workouts connected or just hard?
(Pic from this week’s long training block on Oahu)
Ramping up treadmill miles and strength work this year for Hawaii’s HURT 100, aiming for my 9th finish. Lessons from experience & science: Last year, also trained in snow which was not as effective; slick conditions forced slower paces, increasing RPE/HR without proportional training gains. Plus, that 50-miler I won 6 weeks prior left me flat (recovery: 5-9+ days muscles, 2+ weeks stress markers). Still nabbed 2nd-best time at the HURT. Racing toll? Huge, energy loss, muscle damage, high cortisol if too close. True training: stimuli + rest + adaptation via periodization. Else? Just exercise. #UltraRunning
Main workouts are progressing in difficulty /duration week to week the following: 2 back to back long runs each week, uphill treadmill threshold /anaerobic efforts, uphill short, hard sprints with rest between (15sec x10 reps), strides, two strength workouts for muscular endurance with progressing weight per week on harder days (threshold workouts/sprint workouts).
Where do you like to place strength work in your training schedule as an endurance runner? Ie- on harder days like tempo workouts or threshold reps or long runs or easy days? Assuming 3 things: 1. you have 2 strength workouts a week & 2. The strength work is for muscular endurance related to ultrarunning (step ups, Bulgarian split squats, jumping lunges, deadlifts with weight) & 3. You’re in building phase of training
Made my parents listen to me break down AeT vs AnT, why a big gap means you’re endurance-green, a small one means elite, and too small means your anaerobic system’s on vacation. They didn’t ask. They nodded anyway. True endurance is parenting 😆
Every race in the Triple Crown of 200s (Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200 and Moab 240) has raffled off race artwork for a cause. We have matched donations at Destination Trail.
For Tahoe 200 we donated to the Tahoe Rim Trail. At the Bigfoot 200 we donated to the White Pass High School Athletic department. At the Moab 240 we donated to the Grand County Search and Rescue. What's cool is that we can support artists who make the art as well as important non profits in each regional race location ❤️
