Regional economies lose out if Heathrow expands. Three-quarters of any benefit is concentrated in London. Where's the levelling up? #NoThirdRunway

DfT's own appraisal report says Heathrow expansion has a negative Net Present Value of minus £62.5bn. That's a £1bn cost to the economy every year for the next 60 years! Surely it is time Government think again and say #NoThirdRunway

Data centres are springing up everywhere, using massive amounts of energy and water. I’ve signed Friends of the earth's petition calling for a pause on new data centres until the government gets a grip on the situation. Will you join me? action.friendsoftheearth.uk/…

Expansion won't deliver growth and won't deliver for the regions of the UK. The DfT's external peer reviewer, Dr James Laird states: “In my view it would be erroneous to claim a broad distribution of the gains from Heathrow to regions on the basis of the modelling.” #NoEconomicBenefit #2pperperson #NoThirdRunway

It is often repeated that El Niño is a natural phenomenon. It is, like warm days in summer, rain in autumn, hurricanes in the Caribbean & unusually dry periods in otherwise wet regions. Like all those, however, it is the strength & frequency that is not natural. El Niño is this time at an extreme never before recorded & the scientist who sounded the alarm on climate to the US Congress in the 1980s says ‘The abnormal El Niño strength is itself likely human-driven’. More than 90% of the heat so far trapped by human pollution has been absorbed by the ocean. Now some of it is being released again. 2027 is thus set to be more extreme than 2026, & widely forecast to be the warmest year recorded. That in turn will spark extreme weather of different kinds, including drought & flood, with knock on effects across food, water, infrastructure, the natural world & health. Making preparations for extreme conditions in 2027, & the rest of this year, would be wise. It is also important, I think, for discussions about the intensity of this El Niño to register a likely link with human impacts on the atmosphere & ocean. Or we could just fill the media with coverage about Harry & Megan…
The El Nino is off the charts. Can people see the real issue and accept the implications? We may be getting closer. See the Bigger Problem – mailchi.mp/caa/super-duper-e… Also available on Substack: jimehansen.substack.com/p/su…

The numbers don’t lie. A third runway at Heathrow would hurt our regions, not help them. The DfT predicts growth at non-London airports will be 17% lower by 2050 if Heathrow expands. Britain deserves balanced growth, not London at the expense of everywhere else. #NoThirdRunway

All Londoners should be able to swim safely in the capital’s waterways. A proposed bathing water site on the Thames is a big step forward and could help make that possible if approved. My upcoming Clean and Healthy Waterways Plan will take this further. standard.co.uk/news/politics…

Oh look, it rained. Areas of the country where water companies are currently dumped sh*t into rivers and on to beaches. Brown, currently dumping sewage. Red, has been dumping sewage within the last 24 hours.
